A seamless experience is key when it comes to password management, which is what makes 1Password important. Whether it’s creating strong passwords, sharing sensitive codes, or quickly signing in to your accounts, the password manager ticks all the necessary boxes. It is this hassle-free password management that compels me to always use 1Password on my devices. I use Touch ID with 1Password’s Chrome extension for a more convenient unlocking process for my online accounts. Set Up and Use Touch ID with 1Password Chrome Extension on Mac
Before we begin, there are a few points to note. If you don’t want to read them, use the table of contents below to jump straight to the tutorial.
Important Thing to Keep in Mind
So how do you install the 1Password Chrome extension with Touch ID? Well, both the 1Password app for Mac and the Chrome extension work in sync. So when you set password manager to unlock using fingerprint sensor, browser extension and main app will be unlocked at the same time. To be more precise, unlocking one unlocks the other so you don’t have to go through the pain of repeating the same action.
So, What is Capture?
Note that 1Password X is not compatible with Touch ID. So if you want to use the fingerprint sensor make sure you use the standard extension. It’s worth noting that if you’re using the required desktop app for macOS, the extension must be version 4.7.x. And 1.15.x you are using 1Password X which does not work with fingerprint sensor. Long story short, make sure you tick the compatibility box.
Set up Touch ID in 1Password on macOS
To get started, we’ll first need to enable Touch ID to work with 1Password on macOS.
- start 1Password application on your Mac.
2. Now, enter your master key To unlock the password manager.
3. Next, click on 1Password menu and Select preferences.
4. Next, click on Security tab and then tick the box to the left Touch ID.
From now on, you can unlock 1Password using Touch ID on your Mac. As outlined above, the desktop app syncs with the Chrome extension so you have a smooth unlocking experience. Make sure you don’t forget your master password, as sometimes you may need to enter it instead of Touch ID.
If the password manager is locked, you should see a popup saying “1Password is trying to unlock. Tap ID or enter your password to allow this.” Then you can use the fingerprint sensor to quickly enter the extension.
If the prompt doesn’t show the option to use Touch ID, click . Tap the ID button on the lock screen.
Note:
- Depending on your needs, you can change how often your Master Password is required instead of Touch ID. Just open 1Password -> IPassword menu -> Preferences -> Security tab. Now select the duration from the Require Master Password drop-down menu.

So you can use Touch ID on Mac with 1Password Chrome extension. As long as you check the compatibility box (as mentioned above), you can use the fingerprint sensor with the accompanying Chrome extension without any problems.
