How to Use Live Captions in Google Chrome

Announced at Google I/O 2019, Google added Live Caption first to the Pixel 4 and other Pixel phones, then to select Samsung Galaxy and OnePlus phones in the first half of 2020. The company then started work on bringing Live Caption to Google Chrome. May last year and now finally added it to Chrome’s stable channel. This feature is available to all Chrome users, so here is how you can enable and use Live Caption in Google Chrome.

Use Live Captions in Google Chrome

I tested Live Caption Google Chrome version 89.0.4389.90 On my Windows 10 laptop. If you don’t see the feature, make sure you update the browser to the latest version. You can check for updates in Help -> About Google Chrome. Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at how this feature works.

What is Live Caption?

Live Caption is an excellent accessibility feature. automatically adds subtitles to the media you are playing on your device. This feature can add subtitles to videos, audio messages and podcasts. Moreover, it works even when you turn off the video. subtitles locally processed and not stored or sent to Google’s servers. The latest feature rollout expands the availability of Live Caption on Google Chrome desktop. At the time of writing this article, you can only use Live Caption to convert media to text in English.

Enable or Disable Live Caption in Chrome

1. Open Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the upper right corner. From the list of options, Click on Settings.

2. On the Settings page, Go to Accessibility Under Advanced settings to see newly added Live Subtitle transition. Turn the knob and you’re ready to use the Live Caption feature.

3. Using Live Caption in Chrome

After enabling Live Caption, you will notice that Chrome automatically starts adding captions when you play media. Subtitles appear in an overlay at the bottom of the browser window. Here’s the feature in action on Google Podcasts:

If you click the down arrow in the subtitle box, you will see the expanded view with more text fields. It is worth noting that you can reposition the box by clicking and dragging. The expanded view looks like this:

To hide Live Subtitles, Click the close button in the upper right corner of the box. You can also enable or disable the feature from Chrome’s global media controls.
