How to Use Focus Mode on iPhone 1

How to Use Focus Mode on iPhone

With iOS 15, Apple is rocking the default DND (Do Not Disturb) mode on the iPhone. You can no longer get DND mode in Control Center and Settings menu. The new Focus mode aims to take the DND experience to the next level on iPhone running iOS 15 or higher. Here’s how to use it.

The previous DND mode was not intuitive in some ways. The limited customization options weren’t exactly useful.

Focus Mode carries the standard Do Not Disturb mode and other Focus profiles for use as the situation demands.

What is Focus Mode on iPhone?

Focus mode is an enhanced version of the old Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. Focus mode carries multiple Focus profiles like Do Not Disturb, Work, Home and more to let you customize notification and calling behavior on iPhone.

With Simple Do Not Disturb mode, you only get one profile to work with. This is not enough and you cannot customize it to the situation and needs every time. This is where the focus mode comes into play.

Focus profiles

It comes with built-in profiles like Do Not Disturb, Driving, Sleep, Personal, and Work. So you can create one according to your preferences and give it an appropriate name.

How to Access Focus Mode on iPhone

There are two ways to access Focus Mode on iPhone. First, on iPhone, you can open the Settings app and use the Focus menu to see the available Focus profiles and their associated default settings.

What are Focus Profiles?

Focus mode on iPhone comes with different Focus profiles to choose from. By default Apple added Home, Work, Do Not Disturb and Sleep mode.

Depending on the scenario and the customization options added, you can choose a Focus profile. For example, while driving, you can select the Driving Focus profile and the system will make the necessary changes to mute notifications and allow calls from selected contacts.

For each profile, you can define which people can reach you by calling or texting. You can also specify which apps can send notifications during that Focus profile.

Users can also create a separate Focus profile from the same menu. For example, you can create a Focus profile for Writing and only allow notifications from business apps.

Similarly, you can create a Focus profile for any health activity like Running or Yoga and mute incoming calls from everyone and enable notifications for health related apps on iPhone. The possibilities are endless here.

How to Share Focus Profiles Between Devices

One of the best things about living in an Apple ecosystem is that you get the same experience on all Apple devices. Focus mode is no exception here.

Apple has also moved the Focus mode from iPhone to iPad and Mac. You can sync custom Focus profiles created on all Apple devices using the same Apple ID. Here’s how to do it.

Stage 1: Open the Settings app on iPhone.

Step 2: Go to the focus menu.

How to Customize Focus Mode

There are a number of customization options to keep in mind when creating a custom Focus profile.

Time Sensitive Notifications

This allows people and apps to notify you immediately, even when your Focus mode is on. You can enable the toggle in Settings > Focus > Focus Profile.

iOS notifies people that notifications are muted when this toggle is on, and on the other hand, the person can skip it and still notify you when something important happens.

Home and Lock Screen Customization

For each Focus profile, you can customize the look of the home screen and lock screen with special apps and widgets.

For example, Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, Apple Music with a widget, etc. You can define the main screen during Driving mode to show
