How to Update Xbox One

Microsoft has practically told everyone that the Xbox One game console’s software, or what most gamers call the Xbox One Dashboard, will see a series of updates throughout its lifecycle. In fact, if the Xbox 360’s lifecycle is an accurate indication of what’s to come, users may find that Microsoft offers radical new features with future software updates over time.

By default, Xbox One automatically checks for such software updates once a night for anyone who has the console’s Instant-on mode enabled. Here’s how to make sure Instant-on is enabled on your Xbox One and keep it up to date with the latest updates.

Press Guide Press the button or say “Xbox, Go Home” if your Kinect 2 sensor is attached to your console.

choose My games and apps or say “Go to Xbox, My Games & Apps”.

When updates are ready, your Xbox One will download them in the background and promptly ask for your permission to install them once they’re live. Currently, Xbox One does not allow users to manually check for updates from Xbox One. Microsoft notes that as long as the console is connected to Xbox Live, it will automatically check for the latest software update.

It’s also important to note that Microsoft currently does not allow users to download software updates to a flash drive to update their consoles. So, if there is a must-have feature in an update, there is currently no way to avoid taking the console to a friend or family member’s home. Microsoft says users who choose not to bring the console online should be fine playing games on their consoles, most without any updates. On the other hand, support documents also indicate that games using the Kienct 2 sensor included with the Xbox One may not work properly without the latest software updates.
