Most web browsers today have a ‘mini-apps’ component or support it independently. Google Chrome takes this to the next level with Progressive Web Apps. A few developers prefer Progressive Web Apps (PWA), which installs the web wrapper of their apps (also called Chrome apps) on your PC or desktop. The problem arises when you want to uninstall these apps from your device. You cannot use standard ways to uninstall Chrome apps on your Windows or Mac.
Besides Chrome apps, Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers also allow you to install extensions from the Chrome app store. These extensions can be helpful in certain situations, but you need to keep track of installed extensions as too many unused extensions can degrade the browser’s performance.
In this article, we will talk about how to uninstall Chrome apps and extensions on Windows and Mac.
Remove Chrome Extensions
As I mentioned earlier, you can install as many extensions as you want from the Chrome web store. However, a user should not overdo it, as some sketchy extensions can steal private browsing data. After some time, it is always recommended to check the list of installed extensions in the Google Chrome browser and remove unnecessary ones.
Google Chrome looks and feels the same on both Windows and Mac. The steps to remove the extension in the Chrome browser are the same on both platforms.
Stage 1: Open the Google Chrome browser on your Windows or Mac device.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and go to Settings.
Stage 3: You will find the extension in the left sidebar. Tap on it.
Step 4: It will open a separate Extensions menu in a new tab. Here you will see all the extensions installed in your browser.
Step 5: There are two options for you. You can turn off the extension or remove it from the browser.
If you need the extension for later use, you can disable the extension from the menu. It hides the extension from the browser menu bar but remains accessible from the extension menu.
Tap Uninstall to completely remove the extension from the browser.
Alternatively, you can right-click the extension in the Chrome menu bar (or use two-finger click if you’re using a trackpad) and select Uninstall from Chrome.
Uninstall Chrome Apps
On sites like Twitter and Spotify, you’ll find the ‘+’ icon in the address bar. Tap on it and the browser will suggest you to install the PWA (Progressive Web Application) on your Windows or Mac. The only problem is you can’t just treat them as traditional apps and uninstall them.
You can uninstall Chrome apps from the browser itself. Follow the steps below to uninstall Chrome apps.
Stage 1: Open Google Chrome browser on Windows or Mac.
Step 2: Go to the Chrome apps section of the browser. Go to chrome://apps in the address bar and it will open the Chrome apps screen.
Stage 3: Here you will see all installed Chrome apps. Right click on an app and select ‘Uninstall from Chrome’.
Mac and Windows also offer other ways to uninstall Chrome apps without using the Google Chrome browser.
Uninstall Chrome Apps From App Menu
You can uninstall the app directly from the app itself. Go through the steps below.
Stage 1: Open the Chrome app on your Windows device (I opened the Twitter app in the screenshot below).
Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
Stage 3: Select the Uninstall Twitter option.
The problem with this method is that you have to open every app you want to uninstall on Windows or Mac. Wouldn’t it be great if you could uninstall Chrome apps without opening the app or browser? Fortunately, macOS lets you remove Chrome apps from a special folder.
Follow the steps below to find and uninstall Chrome apps on Mac.
Stage 1: Open Spotlight Search using the Command + Space keyboard shortcut.
Step 2: Type Chrome Apps and open the Chrome Apps folder.
Stage 3: Here you will see all installed Chrome apps. Right-click the app icon and select Move to Trash.
The action will uninstall the Chrome app from Mac.
The ability to serve websites as PWA (Progressive Web Application) makes sense for developers. They don’t have to maintain various platforms, and the team can add features and cram those annoying bugs quickly and efficiently. You will need to master the removal process.
Keep Your Browsing Experience Clean
You can uninstall Chrome extensions and Chrome app from your Windows and Mac using the tricks above. Chrome apps have a bright future and I can only see Twitter and other companies following Spotify’s lead.
