In this guide, we will show you how to turn off autoplay videos in the YouTube app. If you’re worried about data usage or don’t want videos to play by themselves, we’re here to help. You can quickly change a few settings and stop videos from playing automatically.
In 2017 Google started testing it on mobile devices and made it official in April 2018. If you see videos playing by themselves in the YouTube app, don’t worry. To stop them, simply follow our steps below.
How to Stop YouTube App Autoplay Videos
- YouTube App
- top right (circle)
- Choose from the list of options
- choose now
- Select and turn the key
Here you will have two options. One is autoplay next video, an old feature that has been around for years. Basically, YT automatically plays the next video when you’re done with what you’re watching. This is nothing new, but you can turn it off.
However, it is relatively new. This is where videos start playing before doing anything within the app. From the home screen, videos start to resume without your permission. That’s what these instructions will stop at. If you like this new feature, at least set it to play over WiFi only, that way you won’t go over your data limit.
Other details
Autoplaying videos is something we have to deal with on mobile. It’s something that happened on Instagram, Facebook, and now it’s on YouTube. When you launch the YouTube app for Android or iPhone, the videos start playing instantly on the landing page. Currently there is no audio and Google is adding subtitles, but that may change in the future.
Either way, follow our steps above and stop them before they start. Personally, I don’t mind videos playing by themselves while on my Wi-Fi connection. So I modified my app to reflect that. Choose the best for you. We’ll update this post with more information or instructions as things change in the YouTube mobile app.
