How to Turn Off Severe Weather Alerts on Galaxy S6

When bad weather or a major storm hits your way, most likely the Galaxy S6 has some severe weather alerts that go at full volume and can be extremely annoying, not to mention scary if you don’t expect it. This guide explains how to disable all or most of the severe weather and other alerts on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably woken up in the middle of the night to your phone turning on at full volume and vibrating so loudly, it’s scary. This is a severe weather or emergency alert. They are required by the government, but can be disabled.

Emergency alerts or severe weather alerts are sent to wireless devices from several different sources. These could be government officials, local and state security agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the National Weather Service, or even Homeland Security. The Galaxy S6 even gets Presidential Alerts, the only alert that cannot be disabled. Read on for quick how-to instructions.

Almost all smartphones have serious and emergency notifications, alarms or alerts, but Samsung’s seems to be the most sudden and loud. For the first time, I thought my Galaxy S5 had turned into a Transformer, making noise at full volume and in the middle of the night. If you don’t want this to happen, disable these alerts.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 (and most Galaxy devices) has four different alerts. Presidential, Extreme, Violent and AMBER alerts. All but one can be disabled.

We recommend that users leave all these important warnings enabled for their own safety, but if you want to get rid of them, we will tell you how. Read the instructions if you don’t want to be bothered by these highly intrusive alerts, even though they may wake users up at night.

Instructions

The control of emergency and weather alerts on the Samsung Galaxy S6 is managed through the text messaging application “”. Users have to go to the stock messaging app, then tap the “” button in the top-right corner, followed by the ““. This brings up a menu of options and you need to go to ““.

Click on Emergency alerts, then tap on Emergency alerts again and you will now be in the area showing all four alerts. Each has a simple on/off switch and you can turn three of the four off. The only thing that cannot be turned off are the Presidential alerts.

Tap the slider to turn off the Extreme, Severe and AMBER alerts as desired and you’re done. These settings are strangely hidden and hard to find, but now that you’ve turned them off, they’ll never wake you up again.

We don’t have crazy weather as we’re in Las Vegas so I don’t get any of these alerts very often, but a severe weather warning will sound for the occasional storm. That’s the only thing I disabled. Users can choose what they want to keep open and what they want to turn off.
