How to Sync Your OneDrive Pictures and Documents with Windows 8

When you’re about to switch to a new computer and switch between two different computers, nothing is more frustrating than having to manage your files. Today, many users still copy them to a hard drive and then sync them, but with Windows 8, Microsoft added OneDrive, a cloud storage service that automatically backs up users’ stuff.

With the free Windows 8.1 update, Windows 8’s OneDrive support is more features complete. What made OneDrive such a big upgrade in Windows 8 was the automatic backup. Previously, Windows 8 users were unable to back up their files to a Microsoft-made service without having to install additional software that sometimes clogs their computers.

Getting pictures, documents and files to OneDrive has never been easier than in Windows 8. Unfortunately, restoring them to your computer isn’t always that easy.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make OneDrive images, documents, and more available offline in Windows 8. It is absolutely essential that you have Windows 8.1 installed on your Windows 8 device before trying this out for yourself. To see if it is, go to the Start Screen and tap or click the Store icon. If you see a purple bar on the left asking you to upgrade for free, you should do this update now. Usually, the update takes about an hour on a fast internet connection.

Press the Windows key on your keyboard or the Windows button next to your tablet or 2-in-1 screen to go to .

Search for the app on your device’s Start Screen. A dark blue tile that looks like it has two clouds floating in it. If you see it, open it by tapping or clicking on it.

If you don’t see it, OneDrive is not pinned to your Start Screen. To find the OneDrive mouse and keyboard, users must click the arrow in the lower right corner of their screen to open the full list of all installed apps. Touch users should place their finger anywhere on the Start Screen and swipe up to reveal the same list of installed apps. Find OneDrive in the list and tap or click on it.

Before syncing everything to your device, it’s important to see how much storage your stuff will take up. Look at the labeled area. Going to sync all your OneDrive content if it’s higher than Available Space is a very, very bad idea. You’ll want to sync files and folders instead because your device doesn’t have enough space.

Tap or click the switch under Access All My OneDrive Files Offline. If you’re sure you’re ready to sync all your content, the process will begin.

For users who don’t have a lot of stuff stored on OneDrive, syncing should be pretty fast. If there is a lot of content to sync, the process can take several hours or even days. For example, the computer used in this example has 13GB of data that would take quite a while to sync.

Many Windows Store apps that open from the Start Screen have OneDrive integration, so they can already detect files in the OneDrive folder when you open them. For example, when you open the Photos app, it automatically checks here for new pictures and videos. Xbox Music, on the other hand, doesn’t, but you can add the OneDrive folder to its settings. You will need to browse the OneDrive folder in desktop apps. For example, if you want iTunes to find music there, you have to tell it to check the settings there as well.

Good luck with syncing and keeping all your memories.
