How to Stop Sharing Your Location on Snapchat

The new Snapchat Snap Map is a way to see where your friends are, but it’s a problem for some parents and users who aren’t thrilled that the app shares your location every time you open Snapchat. This means that the Snap Maps feature not only shares your location when you send a Snap at a great event or cafe, but it also does this while browsing snaps at home.

We’ve already shown you how to use Snap Maps, but if you’ve set this up and decide you don’t want to share your real-time location every time you open the Snapchat app, that’s how to turn it off or just share with specific people. Parents can check these settings to make sure kids don’t share their location with too many people.

The Snap Maps feature only shares your location with your Snapchat friends, but many Snapchat users are friends with random people and other users they find interesting. It’s very likely that there are people on your Snapchat or your kids’ Snapchat friend lists that you don’t really know.

How to Stop Snapchat Location Sharing

Stop sharing your Snapchat location on Snap Maps or limit who can see it.

There are two options to stop sharing your location on Snapchat. The features are easy to use and you can control most of them. It would be nice if Snap Maps didn’t share your location when you opened the app, but since that’s how it works, you’ll probably want to change your location sharing settings.

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Pinch to Zoom, which pinches open the Map.
  3. Tap the settings cog in the top right with a location marker on it.
  4. Switch to Ghost Mode.

In Ghost Mode you will not share your location on Snapchat with anyone. You can look at where other people are and areas of the big Snapchat event, but you won’t be sharing your location.

For many users, the Choose Friend option is a better option. This allows you to share your location only with certain friends you know and who have no problem knowing your exact location every time you open Snapchat.

As bad as it sounds, this new Snapchat feature includes all the controls you need to make sure your location is only shared with people you trust. The options are simple and easy enough to allow users and parents to make informed decisions about location sharing on Snap Maps.
