With AirPlay, mirroring videos from iPhone to compatible devices like Apple TV is a seamless experience. While there are several third-party wireless streaming services on the market, none can compete with Apple’s repertoire of media streaming technology. The latest iteration of iOS allows iPhones to automatically connect to AirPlay TVs so users can start watching right away. Although it’s a well thought out feature, I don’t think everyone will appreciate this behavior. Frankly, I found it a little disturbing. It’s not like that every time I play videos on iPhone, I want to send them immediately on the big screen. Fortunately, Apple has offered a way to stop iPhone and iPad from automatically connecting to AirPlay TVs. Let me tell you how it works!
Prevent iPhone and iPad from Automatically Connecting to AirPlay TVs
You guessed it. At least for now, you can’t turn this AirPlay feature off without having to dive a little deeper into Settings. One more thing to keep in mind is that to take control, your devices must be running iOS 13.2 and the equivalent iPadOS version. Otherwise, the Automatic AirPlay option will not appear.
1. Start Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Next, tap on General.
2. Next, tap on it. AirPlay and Handoff.
3. Next, tap on Automatically AirPlay to TVs.
4. On the next screen you have three options:
- Never: Select this to prevent your iOS or iPadOS device from automatically sending video to AirPlay supported smart TVs.
- To ask: Select this to receive an alert asking you to confirm before automatically connecting to nearby AirPlay TVs when playing videos in compatible apps.
- Automatic: It is selected by default and allows you to automatically mirror videos playing on your device.
choose Never. If you wanted to change this behavior and want to get the default functionality back, go to the same settings (mentioned above) and then Automatic Finally.
Stop Your iOS or iPadOS Device from Auto-Connecting to AirPlay TVs
Extending the boundaries of AirPlay beyond the Apple ecosystem is part of a long-standing strategy to drive the growth of a number of Apple Services, including the newly launched Apple TV+. With this media streaming protocol finally moving beyond the Apple ecosystem, we’ll see if iMessage and AirDrop also get the much-anticipated expansion. We hope Apple is working to bring these features to platforms because they are really good. And finding iMessage alternatives or AirDrop alternatives can be a quick fix but not a real solution.
