How to Show Battery Percentage in macOS Big Sur

Keeping a tab on battery percentage has become more or less a habit for me. It’s a little more helpful in showing how much juice is left in the tank and roughly how long I can stay without worrying about charging my Mac. So, as soon as I upgraded my MacBook from macOS Catalina to macOS Big Sur, I wanted to display the battery level indicator in the menu bar as the battery icon was missing from the context menu. Fortunately, I soon found a slightly hidden setting under System Preferences to show battery percentage in macOS Big Sur.

Considering how user-friendly the battery level indicator is, I guess many of you are wondering where it’s going. And more importantly, why hasn’t Apple added it to the contextual menu of the battery icon? If you are one of them, let me show you how you can view/hide battery percentage on your Mac running macOS 11.

Show Battery Percentage in Menu Band and Control Center

  1. Start System Preferences On your Mac (alternatively, click the Apple menu icon in the upper left corner and choose System Preferences).

2. Now select Dock and Menu Bar.

3. “Other Control Center Mod…” Click on the section and then Battery.

4. Next, check the box. Show Percentage.

This much! From now on, the battery percentage will start showing up in the Menu bar and Control Center on your Mac.

Hide Battery Percentage in Menu Bar and Control Center

If you want to hide the battery percentage on your Mac, all you have to do is go to System Preferences -> Dock and Menu Bar -> “Other Control Center Mode…”. Now, Uncheck the Show Percentage box.

How to Check Remaining Battery Time Estimate in macOS Big Sur

If you want to know when you need to connect your Mac to a power source while you’re working on your Mac, you can quickly check the remaining battery time estimate. And that too, directly from the menu bar.

1. click on battery icon located in the menu bar.

2. You should now see the remaining battery time estimate in the contextual menu that pops up.

Note: The contextual menu of the battery icon also shows the app on your Mac that is consuming a significant amount of battery. If your computer is consuming too much battery then take control of this app to increase battery life.
