How to Share Live Location with Friends on Strava

Strava is undoubtedly a popular choice among runners and cyclists, thanks to its robust activity tracking and social features. While the free version of the app offers basic features like activity logging and access to Strava’s social network, the company has long placed live location tracking behind a subscription. Not anymore. Strava has recently made its live location sharing feature “Beacon” available to all users for free. So, if you want to keep your friends and family up to date with your running routes, we’ll teach you how to share your live location on Strava.

What is the Strava Mark?

Strava Beacon is a live location sharing service from the popular running app. with the beacon, you can share your location with up to three people. You can select these security contacts from within the app. Just before starting the run, the app generates a unique URL You can share it with your security links. Link sharing is via SMS message, but you can also choose to share the link manually using any of the secure messaging apps.

Although you can use the Strava Beacon for free with your phone, you will need a Strava subscription to use the Beacon with: compatible Garmin devices and Apple Watch Series 2 or later. Apart from that, read the next section to learn how to set up security connections and use Strava Beacon on your iPhone or Android device.

Set up Security Contacts on Strava

note: We will demonstrate the working of the feature using an Android device, but the steps will remain the same on iOS.

1. Open Strava and Press ‘Save’ from the bottom navigation bar. When the running/bike registration screen appears, Tap the sign icon from the bottom panel.

2. You will now see a toggle Enable ‘Beacon for mobile’. Open it and you will see the ‘Add Security Contacts’ option. You can add up to three security contacts with whom you want to share your live location on Strava.

3. Review your contacts list and select up to 3 contacts. press the save button It’s in the upper right corner when you’re done.

4. Before sharing your live location, you can choose to customize the invitation message that comes with the tracking link. All you have to do is tap ‘Message’ and customize the predefined template if you want.

Share Live Location with Strava Beacon

  1. After installing the security contacts, Tap the ‘Send Sign Text’ button Before you start your run. Then a share sheet will open with the option to share the link of the messaging apps.

2. Now you can send an SMS to the contact. Alternatively, you can copy the link and share it on a messaging platform of your choice. When the receiver opens the Strava link, they can see your running path along with the live location. Specifically, anyone with the link can view this data in a browser and You don’t need to install the Strava app.

3. When you expand the Status section, you can also view additional statistics such as distance traveled, active time, and battery percentage of the runner’s phone. It will actively sync state as you can see in the second image below where I paused the run.
