The iPhone 5s fingerprint sensor is one of the most talked about features of Apple’s new iPhone. Instead of entering password or PIN, users can put their finger on home button and it will unlock iPhone instantly.
Apple calls this feature Touch ID, and in addition to unlocking the phone when there is a passcode, a user can also bypass the lock screen while in the grace period between last use and lock for faster access to your information.
Apple goes a step further with its App Store and iTunes integration. Instead of entering a complex Apple ID password to make a purchase, users can put their fingers on the home button.
The iPhone 5s setup will prompt users to create a Touch ID fingerprint lock, but if you’re in a store or in a hurry, it’s easy to bypass this at first.
We’ll show you how to set up Touch ID on iPhone 5s and use Touch ID to unlock iPhone and make purchases.
How to Set Up Touch ID on iPhone 5s?
In the four-minute video below, we explain what Touch ID is and show you how to set it up with up to five fingers, and then use Touch ID instead of an Apple ID password to shop on the iPhone App Store.
The first thing you need to do is go to Settings -> General -> Password & Fingerprint. This will ask you to create a passcode and fingerprint. If you don’t like using fingerprints, you can just use a passcode, but you cannot use a fingerprint without a passcode. Apple will ask for a passcode after a reboot and if the iPhone has not been used within 48 hours.
Go ahead and enter a passcode twice to confirm. Once this is done you can tap on Fingerprints.
From here you can train up to five fingerprints. I worked my index fingers and thumbs and I had room for another fingerprint. The system learns to read prints from multiple angles and gets better over time.
When the screen is successful, you can continue to add another finger or sign out to start using the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
When the iPhone is locked or just on a lock screen, press the home button with your finger to light up the screen, it will instantly read your fingerprint and if all is well it should unlock the iPhone. After a few hours, it was about 90% accurate in our tests.
When you try to make a purchase in the App Store or iTunes, iPhone 5s will ask you to use your fingerprint instead of the Apple ID passcode.
Users can delete their fingerprints if they no longer want to use it. Apple’s marketing states that the fingerprint is not stored on the iPhone, essentially saying that the fingerprint won’t go to the NSA, iCloud, or some third-party service.
