How to Set Up iMessage on Your Mac

iMessage is one of the best ways to keep in touch with your colleagues, friends and family. With a few simple steps, iMessage can be set up on any Mac.

One advantage of setting up Messages for Mac is that all conversations made via iMessage on iPhone or iPad are also synced to your Mac. It’s important to note that only iMessages are synced to all devices, not regular text messages.

iMessages sent to a user’s phone number and not their Apple ID email address are also forwarded to the Mac. If the user does not sync their iPhone contacts with iCloud, the messages will only appear with the contact’s phone number.

Go to and select

Message PreferencesGo to the top left, click and select

Register

Tap and select tab

enter and click

After this step is complete, the window should look like the one below.

Account Added

The Apple ID will appear at the top with the box checked. Also, if iMessage is set up on an iPhone, the phone number will appear with a checkmark applied. This ensures that iMessages are sent to that particular phone number.

Another feature that Messages for Mac has is the ability to send instant messaging messages from popular platforms like AIM, Yahoo!, Google and even Facebook. This is a nice feature. All your messages are in one location instead of logging into multiple browser tabs. To add a chat account, tap at the bottom left of the accounts window and enter your login information

In terms of compatibility, Messages only comes in OSX Mountain Lion, which is disappointing for users running Lion or Snow Leopard. Also, there is currently no way to get iMessages on Windows.
