Unlike Android, Apple does not offer an easy way to customize notification sounds for different apps on iPhone. However, messaging apps have implemented workarounds to allow users to set different notification tones for incoming messages. Here’s how you can use custom notification sounds for WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Mail app on iPhone.
Let’s start with WhatsApp and move on to other apps.
1. Set Custom Notifications for WhatsApp
You cannot use custom notification sound from iPhone Settings menu. You have to make the change from the WhatsApp app on the iPhone. Here’s what you need to do.
Stage 1: Open WhatsApp on iPhone.
Step 2: Go to the settings menu.
Stage 3: Select Notifications.
Step 4: Tap on Sound and change the usual message notification sound on iPhone. You can also change the sound of the group notification from the same menu.
WhatsApp is one step ahead and allows you to set different notification sounds for specific contacts. Here’s how.
Stage 1: Open WhatsApp and select the conversation for which you want to set a custom sound.
Step 2: Tap the contact name at the top.
Stage 3: Select Wallpaper and Sound.
Step 4: Set a custom tone for the contact from the menu below.
You can apply the same trick to WhatsApp groups. We’ve seen that users can quickly pay attention to them and check other messages later by setting custom WhatsApp message tones for family members.
2. Set Custom Notifications for Telegram
Telegram has a similar workaround for using custom notification sounds on iPhone. To use them, follow the steps below.
Stage 1: Open the Telegram app and go to Settings.
Step 2: Select Notifications & Sounds.
Stage 3: From the Message Notifications menu you will find three options – Private Chats, Group Chats and Channels.
In Telegram you can go to each menu and choose a custom sound for each type of notification.
For example, you can go to Private Chats and change the notification tone for messages. From the same menu, you have the option to set exceptions.
Step 4: Tap on Add an Exception and change the alert tones for selected contacts in Telegram.
This is much better than going into each contact menu and setting custom tones for favorite contacts. Telegram has once again overshadowed WhatsApp here.

Stage 1: Launch the Messenger app on iPhone.
Step 2: Tap the profile picture at the top.

Step 2: Tap on the contact name and open the info menu.
Stage 3: Scroll down to Notifications & sounds.
Step 4: Choose a custom message notification sound for a specific contact.
You can apply the same number to the selected Messenger contact and set unique notification sounds for them.
