How to Save Battery Life When Using 5G on iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

While Apple is a bit late in the 5G game, the tech giant has arranged all new iPhones to use 5th generation cellular technology. While the fact that 5G is significantly faster cannot be denied (theoretically, it can reach speeds of up to 20GB per second), this fast speed comes at the expense of around 20% faster battery consumption. If you consume more battery than you can afford, here’s how you can save battery life when using 5G on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max.

Optimize 5G to Increase Battery Life on iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

To help you have better control over 5G on your iPhone 12 Series, Apple offers multiple options you can use to strike a good balance between network speed and battery life. For example, you can choose to enable 5G only when necessary for HD video streaming, high-octane gaming, or high-quality FaceTime video calling.

And if the device doesn’t need a top speed of 5GB to perform basic tasks, you can set it to use 4G on your iPhone 12 to reduce battery consumption. Also, if you are worried about unexpected battery drain on your iOS device and you think 4G is more than just getting you to do your tasks, you can choose to disable 5G on the device altogether.

  1. start Settings app on your iPhone 12 Series.

2. Now, tap on Mobile/Cellular.

3. Next, tap on it. Mobile/Cellular Data Options.

4. Next, tap on Voice and Data.

5. Up next, you have three options:

  • 5G Auto: Select this option to allow your iPhone to automatically switch to LTE if your device does not require 5G speeds. This smart switching can play a vital role in reducing unnecessary battery consumption. If you live in an area with a strong 5G connection, I recommend choosing this option. It allows your device to connect to a 5G network when needed and switch to LTE when the fastest speeds are not required.
  • 5G On: Select this if you want your device to always stay connected to the 5G network. Note that it will kill a large amount of battery in your device.
  • LTE: Select this to allow your device to use only LTE network even when 5G is available. Use this option if you don’t need top speed at the expense of faster battery drain.

Save Battery Life When Using 5G on iPhone 12 Series

So you can manage 5G more intelligently to prevent your iPhone 12 Series from draining the battery faster. It’s good that Apple has provided multiple options to use this power-hungry feature according to needs.

To strike a better balance between network speed and battery life, 5G automatic seems to be the way to go. Of course, the ability to switch to LTE is also a good option if preserving the battery is your top priority. What do you think of the 5G experience on the iPhone 12?
