How to Remove Background Noise in FaceTime Calls on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Background noise is the last thing you want to deal with when making serious FaceTime calls. In such a situation, the more careful you try to be, the more frustrating it gets. So how do you keep ambient noise out of calls so your communication doesn’t stop or get interrupted? It looks like Apple has come up with a nifty feature that lets you remove background noise from FaceTime calls. If your FaceTime watch party is affected by unwanted noise, let me show you how to enable Sound Isolation on FaceTime calls to remove background noise on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Isolate Background Noise in FaceTime Calls (2022)

Before we look at the steps to enable the feature, let’s take a look at how Sound Isolation works in FaceTime and which devices support it.

How Soundproofing Works in FaceTime

Sound Isolation uses machine learning (ML) technology to suppress ambient noise and prioritize your voice over FaceTime calls. Therefore, the surrounding ambient noise does not affect your ongoing conversation.

By default, FaceTime uses the standard microphone on your Apple device. However, when you set Sound Isolation as your preferred option, the video calling app blocks unwanted noise from the start for all other calls.

As for noise suppression efficiency, it depends on the beacon, regardless of its location, and it does a pretty good job. While it was able to achieve impressive sound quality in a quiet environment, it could not achieve the same results in a noisy environment such as a bus stop. However, you can comfortably hold conversations anywhere.

Which Devices Support FaceTime’s Sound Isolation Feature?

FaceTime’s Sound Isolation feature is exclusive to Apple devices with A12 Bionic chip (64-bit ARM-based system on a chip) or newer. This means you will need one of the following devices to use this feature in FaceTime:
