How to Make Sure You Get an iPhone 5 on Release Day

Apple announced the iPhone 5 with a taller display, 4G LTE, and a host of other small but nice additions. Users who want to have the iPhone 5 on the release date need to take action to avoid holding the iPhone 4S for 3-4 weeks.

The iPhone 5 pre-order starts tonight at 3:01 PM Pacific and 3:01 AM Eastern time. This is a late night for iPhone 5 buyers, but it’s the best way to get a “for delivery” notification on the iPhone 5 release date.

iPhone 5 Pre-Order

Apple, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T will be placing pre-orders for the iPhone 5 simultaneously this evening. These pre-orders are likely to go fast, and their website will likely be overwhelmed by the load of iPhone 5 pre-orders.

If you plan to pre-order the iPhone 5 tonight, you will need to check your iPhone 5 upgrade eligibility. Apple generally doesn’t allow no-contract purchases during pre-order, but pricing could be different this year. When checking my iPhone 5 upgrade eligibility, I see full price upgrade options.

Apple may allow contract-free iPhone 5 pre-orders.

Make sure you have the number of the line you plan to upgrade, the last four digits of the primary account holder’s social security number and all account passwords, as well as the online payment method.

Buyers who missed or skipped the iPhone 5 pre-order process can still go to the store on September 21, when the iPhone 5 will go on sale at Apple Stores and at 8am at Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T retail outlets.

If you’re planning to go to an Apple Store for the iPhone 5 release date, arrive early, dress in layers, bring a chair and a friend.

Based on our past experience, our best bet is to find an overlooked corporate store. During the iPhone 4S launch, Moyens I/O Publisher Xavier Lanier walked past a queue at the Apple store to a Verizon kiosk in the same mall with plenty of iPhones in stock.

Next week, I plan to contact my local kiosk and corporate store, where they usually have a list of users interested in the new iPhone. It’s not a pre-order, but in the past the store has called to let me know if they expect it to be in stock I should be there at opening.

Best Buy hasn’t announced the plans, but iPhone 5 introduction So we expect some iPhone 5 units to be in their hands on September 21.

How Long Is The Waiting Time After Pre-Orders?

iPhone OutWith Apple’s initial supply of pre-order iPhone 5 phones typically purchased within 24 hours, the wait time for online deliveries increases to 1-2 weeks. This means users who didn’t receive an iPhone 5 at launch will be looking at a delivery between September 28 and October 5. With past Apple launches, demand has pushed deliveries to 2-3 weeks in some cases.

In past Apple Stores, Best Buy, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have received additional iPhone deliveries in the weeks following initial launch, but finding the iPhone 5 in stock will continue to be difficult for at least a month.

All in all, if you need an iPhone 5 on launch day, stay tuned to pre-order or plan to hit a local store early September 21.
