Kodi is everyone’s favorite media streaming solution, and the Raspberry Pi is the nerds’ playground to do a few great projects. You can always buy a dedicated Kodi box (itself not much different from an Android TV box), but of course it won’t satisfy your inner nerd. Also, you can use a Raspberry Pi to do other projects besides just installing Kodi. However, if you are looking for a simpler, more user-friendly solution, you’d better buy a Kodi box. However, if you love to poke around and aren’t afraid to learn a little in the process, then you’re in for a treat. I will show you today How to install Kodi on Raspberry PI 3 Using OSMC:
Install Kodi on Raspberry Pi 3
Things You Need
- A Raspberry Pi with power supply
- microSD card with adapter/USB drive
- USB keyboard
- HDMI cable
- Raspberry Pi case (Although not strictly necessary, I would definitely recommend getting one.)
Install OSMC on a microSD card
download OSMC installer for your operating system. OSMC is a Debian-based operating system with Kodi installed, and the installer is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- The first time you open the OSMC installer, you will be greeted with a welcome message. choose English (no other languages listed!) and Raspberry Pi 2/3 in the next box and click the next arrow.
- choose version of OSMC you want to download. “2017.02-2” is the latest version as written, but if there is any update, download it instead. Click the next arrow to continue. The installer will try to download the selected version from the Internet in the next step. Alternatively, you can download it first. disc image check “Use a local build on my computer” from their website.
- Plug the card reader with a microSD card into the USB port of your laptop/desktop. “on SD cardWhen it asks where to install OSMC, select ” and click the next arrow.
- In this step, choose your network connection type. Select “Wired connection” if you are using Ethernet and “Wireless” if using WiFi. Click the next arrow to continue.
- If you choose the “Wireless” option, enter your WiFi name and password information and click the next arrow.
- Select the displayed device and click the next arrow. Please install OSMC. Format microSD card, so be sure to back up important files. In the rare case where you cannot see any device, make sure the MicroSD card reader is connected to your laptop/desktop and formatted properly.
- (Read!) and accept the license agreement and proceed to the next screen.
- download (~175MB) will now start and should complete in a few minutes depending on your network connection. Once complete, you’re ready for show time! (or at least it should say so!)
At this point, you have successfully completed the software installation process. Now let’s move on to the hardware part.
Make Necessary Hardware Connections
- Insert the microSD card into the Raspberry Pi’s card slot. Connect the USB keyboard and power supply to the Raspberry Pi.
- Connect the HDMI cable to an external display/TV and turn on the power. You should now see the OSMC window and the startup should complete in a few seconds.
- you should see it fair basic startup wizard at the first start. Use your keyboard to navigate the interface and select things. Just choose your preferred language, time zone, device name and other similar things.
You have the option to choose between two pre-installed themes: Kodi’s new default theme for Krypton, Estuary or OSMC skin. Of course, you can download and apply other themes later.
That’s it! You have successfully installed Kodi on Raspberry Pi 3.

Using Kodi on Raspberry Pi 3
I was able to run Kodi in my limited tests flawless On Raspberry Pi, the 3rd Pi’s 1.2 GHz CPU and 1 GB RAM made for a smooth experience on Kodi. I was able to connect to WiFi and browse plugins. The Pi also has an Ethernet port, so you can do it with a wired Internet connection. it’s possible occasional stuttering When trying to play a high-quality video in the interface, however, I experienced little or no framerate drops. I didn’t watch out for anyone abnormal temperature riseThere are definitely some people in the community. You can always monitor the temperature of the Pi by going to Kodi’s settings. Also make sure you have a case that doesn’t block air circulation. If nothing helps, you can also try using a heat sink.
