How to Install Games on Xbox One

For the next generation of console gaming, both Microsoft and Sony have made big bets on new ways to get games. Xbox One, Microsoft’s video game console for the living room, makes games available in two ways. You can purchase a game as a download from a retail store or digital store. Whichever you decide, you should install the games on Xbox One.

Microsoft has worked hard to make installing games on the console as simple as possible. Games purchased from a retail store like GameStop or Target are ridiculously simple. There is only one step and you lose almost nothing but time. Time is also something for those who buy games for Xbox One digitally to worry about. Downloading games from the Xbox Store to Xbox One can take hours due to the size of the game. It’s not too complicated though.

Regardless of which way you decide to purchase your game, here’s how to install games on Xbox One.

How to Install Games on Xbox One: Disc

If you’re going to install a game on Xbox One from a disc, the process is simple. After you’ve done all the setup of your Xbox One, insert the disc you purchased with the game into the slot install disc drive on the Xbox One or Xbox One S. Both allow you to start installing the game you just installed.

Depending on how big the game is, installing a disc game on Xbox One can take a little or quick. Games on Xbox One are bigger than Xbox 360 games you might be used to. You do not need to keep the console on the Home screen for the installation to continue. Your console will notify you that it is safe to start the game.

Do not trade Xbox One games that you plan to continue playing. Even though you’re installing a game from a disc, the console still requires you to insert that disc as a way to verify you own it. Microsoft had planned to eliminate this requirement, but changed them when buyers made it clear that they wanted the option to play games offline and that they wanted the console to connect to the internet at least once a day.

When you have a physical game on your Xbox One, the fourth icon on Xbox One always shows that game with a disc icon layer. If you uninstall the game, you can insert the disc and reinstall at any time.

If you have an internet connection, Xbox One will check if you have the latest version of any game you have installed. You can choose to install this update immediately or wait until later.

How to Install Games on Xbox One: Digital

There’s a lot more you need to know if you want to install games on Xbox One from the Xbox Store.

You can get digital games from the Xbox Store in the Store area, or by purchasing codes from online purchases from Amazon and GameStop. Disc games sometimes come with digital codes that unlock downloads.

If you have an Xbox One with a Kinect sensor, simply say “Xbox, redeem a code”. This command will take you to a screen that lets you enter the code you have. If you don’t have a code but want to buy a digital game, go to the Store area and find the game in Microsoft’s catalog. You must have a credit card or registered credit card associated with your Microsoft Account. When you try to purchase a game digitally, Xbox will ask you to add a payment method.

Once you redeem a code or buy a game from the store, the download should begin immediately. It will take some time to finish though. How long it takes between you hit “Buy” and it ends depends on the size of the game and your internet connection. Yet all is not lost.

Some games let you start playing before you even finish them. Again, you don’t need to stay on the store page or the main area, your console will tell you when as many games as you can play are installed or when the download is finished.

How to Install Games on Xbox One: Managing Games

You can manage everything about your games right from the screen, whether it comes from a disc or a download. Highlight a game in My Games & Apps and press the Menu button on your Xbox Controller.

From this area, you can monitor games for updates, find out if you have installed them on your console’s internal drive, and find out when you last played them. The screen also gives you access to downloadable content that you have purchased and saved data stored on your console. If you need to delete a game to make room for another, this is done here. Xbox One manages game saves and updates on its own. Therefore, there is no reason for you to go to the management area for these activities.
