Origin is Electronic Art’s digital distribution platform, widely used by people around the world to purchase video games in addition to online multiplayer games. While physical media is dying, digital distribution platforms like Origin and Steam are focusing on convenience, allowing you to buy your favorite games from the comfort of your home. However, there are also disadvantages to using these platforms as you will have to wait for the entire game to be downloaded before you can start playing. If your internet connection is weak, you may have to wait days to download a game. Having said that, what if the platform you are using is throttling the download speed even if you have a high speed internet connection? As reported by numerous users around the world, Origin is notorious for throttling download speeds. But there is a solution and it’s all about running Origin in R&D mode. So, without further delay, let’s take a look Here’s how you can use R&D mode to increase download speed in Origin:
Creating a Configuration File for Origin R&D Mode
Origin’s desktop client is available for both Windows and macOS operating systems. If you haven’t installed it yet, you can download the latest version of the client from here. You will need to create a configuration file for Origin R&D mod to work. To do this, simply follow the steps below:
note: I show this method on my Windows 10 laptop, but the process should be similar on Mac.
- Open notebook on your computer and type the following lines exactly as shown below:
[connection] EnvironmentName=production [Feature] CdnOverride=akamai
- Now, just click File -> Save As to save what you typed. We will also save the file in a different name and format.
- For the filename, type “EACore.ini” As shown below, and make sure you choose “All files” for Save as type as shown in the screenshot below. you should save this INI file on your desktop.
- When done, open Origin desktop client. You will see a popup asking if you want to do it. “Use Configuration File on Desktop”. click Yes.
- You will now be redirected to Origin’s Login page. If you have done the above steps correctly, you will notice this. Origin is now working on R&D mod production simply by looking at the top of the Origin client’s window.
That is all. What are you waiting for? Download your favorite games to instantly notice the speed difference. You’ll now be able to download at the highest possible speed your internet connection can handle, and you’ll no longer be limited by Origin’s throttled speeds.
Download Speed on Origin: Before and After
We wanted to show you how much of a speed boost we’ve had, and it’s pretty remarkable to say the least. WiFi speeds in our office are usually between 8 – 16 Mbps. Well, it’s not necessarily a high-speed internet connection, but results will vary from person to person. Well, before using the R&D mode, we were trying to download Battlefield 1 CTE for approx. 215 KB/s. Frankly, we couldn’t handle it as the file size was almost 47GB and it was painful to watch. That’s why we restarted Origin after setting up the R&D mode and immediately noticed a huge improvement in speed. we were downloading now about 1.5MB/sclose 7x speed increase, compared to what we get without R&D mode. Unlike us, if you have a high-speed internet connection, you may notice a much better improvement in your download speeds.
