When you have multiple objects in your Google Slides, you may find it easy to group them and perform a task on all of them instead of one by one. For example, groups will come in handy if you want to move intersecting shapes and text boxes. If you’re wondering how to group items in Google Slides on mobile and PC, you’ve come to the right place.

How to Group Items in Google Slides on PC
There are three ways to group items on a computer.
Method 1: Group Temporarily
One of the simplest and fastest ways to group items is to select them using click-and-drag. All items that fall within the selected range will be selected. A blue border around them can identify selected items. Now move, resize or perform any action you want on the selected objects.
To ungroup selected items using this method, simply click anywhere outside the selection.

Method 2: Grouping Using the Shift Key
The downside of the above method is that you cannot select the items you want to group. They can be in or out of the selection range. Take the help of the Shift key on your keyboard to group items better.
First, click on any of the items you want to group. Then click to select other items while holding down the Shift key. In this way, you can temporarily group multiple selected items. As you can see in the screenshot below, I’ve grouped the two images at opposite ends and a text box in the middle.
Click outside the selection to ungroup the items. Interestingly, you can deselect items if you want to remove them from your group without starting from scratch. To do this, hold down the Shift key and click on the item you want to deselect.

Method 3: Group Permanently
In the above two methods, when you click somewhere it will disband the group. You will need to use the Group feature to keep the group for future tasks. There are multiple ways to access this. Here are the steps:
Stage 1: Select the items you want to group. You can use method 1 or 2 mentioned above to select, i.e. you can drag or use the Shift key.
step 2: Once the items are selected, right-click on any selected item and select Group.
Alternatively, click Edit from the top menu bar and select Group. If you like keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl + Alt + G (Windows) and Command + Option + G (Mac) to group items after selecting them.
You can also ungroup items in multiple ways.
- Click and right-click any of the grouped items. Select Ungroup.
- Click any grouped item and choose Edit > Ungroup.
- Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + Shift + G (Windows) and Command + Option + Shift + G (Mac) to ungroup items.
How to Group Items in Google Slides on Android and iPhone
Similar to PC, you can group items temporarily or permanently on mobile. Open the Google Slide you want to edit to temporarily group it. Touch and hold the first item you want to group. Now tap on other objects you want to select. You will see that the size of the selection box will increase. Take the necessary action. Tap anywhere outside the selection to ungroup.
To group items permanently, tap and hold the first item, then tap other objects. Then tap the Group objects icon at the top. Even if you select other objects or do other tasks, the items you group will remain locked.
Touch and hold any of the grouped items to ungroup the locked items. Then tap the Group icon you use to group the items. This will ungroup them.

If the Group option is grayed out in Google Slides, you should check if you have selected multiple items correctly as shown above. If multiple items are not selected, you cannot group them.
