The latest iteration of Apple’s desktop operating system was announced at WWDC earlier this month. Dubbed ‘macOS Mojave’, the update brings a host of new features, including some long-awaited things like dark mode, and other pretty cool features and cosmetic upgrades. If you’re wondering how to get these features on a Windows 10 PC, we’ve got your back.
Get macOS Mojave Features on Windows 10
Getting macOS Mojave features in Windows 10 is a relatively simple task, partly because many of these features are built into Windows, and partly because most of the apps you’ll need to get these features are readily available and free. Here’s how to get each of the macOS Mojave features on Windows 10.
1. Dark Mode
Dark mode is the most requested feature of all time. Whereas previous versions of macOS had a completely useless dark mode, this time Apple sent a dark mode that looks good and lives up to its name.
To get dark mode in Windows, all you have to do is tweak a few settings.
- In Settings go to: Personalization.
- here, over there ‘Colors.’
- Scroll down and change ‘Default app mode’ with ‘Dark.’
This will replace all application windows and other elements with shades of black and gray. However, things like the taskbar and Start Menu remain. However, if you scroll up, you’ll find the option to choose a color manually. Simply choose the darkest color you can find here; The Start Menu and taskbar will also go black.
2. Dynamic Wallpaper
Another addition to macOS Mojave came in the form of Dynamic Wallpapers. These are basically wallpapers that change according to the time of day. Therefore, the default Mojave desert wallpaper in macOS Mojave changes the lighting conditions of the photo from day to afternoon, evening, and finally night. It looks stunning.
It’s not currently possible to get exactly this feature in Windows 10, but you can get something pretty close.
- Download macOS Mojave wallpapers from: this link.
- Create a folder and make two copies of each of the wallpapers inside the folder.
- get over your head Personalization settingsand ‘Select ‘Slideshow’ from the ‘Background’ drop-down menu.‘
- Select the folder you just created with the wallpapers and Set ‘change picture’ to ‘6 hours’.
- Now, turn the shuffle and Enable ‘allow slideshow on battery power’.
Basically what you’re doing is setting macOS Mojave’s day and night wallpapers to automatically change every 12 hours giving the illusion that it’s a dynamic wallpaper. Pretty clean, right?
3. Stacks
Stacks have become one of my favorite features in macOS Mojave because my desktop is almost always cluttered. Stacks solve them all. Basically, if I enable Stacks, all my files are automatically sorted into stacks on the wallpaper by file type. All images become one pile, all documents become another pile, and all PDFs become another pile. Stacks are very similar to folders, but much better. Just click on a Stack to expand it and show all its files right there; Click again to collapse.
That’s nice, and luckily you can get similar functionality on Windows.
- First you will have to Download ‘Fences’ (30-day trial, $10)
- install the appand as soon as you complete all the setup formalities like creating a free account, Fences automatically sort your desktop to clean folder-like things.
These don’t look exactly like Stacks, but they bring the same benefits of giving your desktop a much cleaner-than-usual look. While Fences is a paid app, you get a free 30-day trial, after which you have to pay $10 to purchase the full version.
4. Quick Look
Quick Look is a great feature that I love to use on my Mac. It lets me quickly browse for a file, review a video, browse through a PDF content, and all without opening the files in special apps.
A free app is all you need to get the same functionality on Windows.
- From the Microsoft Store, Download the app called ‘QuickLook’. (Free)
- Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to go. simply select an image, file or audio file and press ‘Space’ To open in Quick View
Believe me, Quick View is a feature that will get you hooked on using it. It’s really useful. Also, the Quicklook app in the Microsoft Store is completely free, so it doesn’t hurt to give it a try.
5. Screenshot Tool
The macOS Mojave update also brings an updated and improved screenshot tool. Where users use keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots on Mac, Apple has now added a handy screenshot HUD (comes with screen recording) right there. Also, when you take a screenshot, you can click on the preview image that pops up and you get useful editing shortcuts right there.
If you want a similar feature in Windows, Use an app called Tiny Take (Free). Just install the app on your Windows 10 PC and that’s it. Tiny Take brings a series useful keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots, record screen or even record video from webcam.
Tiny Take does this as well, where after taking the screenshot it takes you directly to a handy editing app where you can do some basic editing including annotation, cropping and more.
However, if you don’t want to install a third-party app, the latest versions of Windows 10 also include a keyboard shortcut. ‘Windows + Shift + S’ Bringing a screenshot tool with a few basic options that should be enough for most people.
6. Finder Features
Apple has also added a few new features to the Finder app in macOS Mojave. This included things like a new ‘Gallery View’, the ability to see full metadata in the sidebar, and quick actions. Apparently, these features already exist in Windows of some sort.
For Gallery View, all you need to do is:
- Go to the ‘View’ tab in Explorer.
- Here, Enable ‘Preview Pane’ To get a Gallery View like view in Explorer.
Similarly, if you want to have the sidebar display metadata, do Enable the ‘Details Pane’ From the ‘View’ options in Explorer.
Quick Actions in macOS Mojave are a little harder to get, but Windows also comes with contextual buttons. In a folder with images you get a ‘Picture tools’ inside Explorer with actions like rotate, set as background and more.
