How to Get iWork for Free on OS X Yosemite

Apple announced last year that the iWork suite of apps, consisting of Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, will be free with any new Mac you purchase. Previously, these apps were $20 per piece. However, existing Mac users with older Macs can’t take advantage of this deal, seeing how the company has made iWork free only for new Macs purchased after yesterday. Either way, here’s how to get iWork for free.

Apparently, there is a clever loophole that allows older Macs to get the iWork app suite for free. It takes a bit of elbow grease – it definitely takes more effort than downloading and installing apps, but it may be worth it for some users who have been wanting the apps for a while.

iWork is free for users who purchased a new Mac computer on or after October 1, 2013, or a new iOS device on or after September 1, 2013. If you’re running an older Mac that you purchased before this date, to collect the $60 needed to purchase and download all three apps.

However, I bought my Mac after October 1, 2013 last year, but the App Store still shows me that I have to pay $20 for each app. We’re not sure if this is a bug or what, but here’s a little trick that will get you the iWork bundle for free as long as you’re willing to work a little to get it.

  1. Double click and follow the installation instructions.
  2. After installation, close the installation windows and wait a few moments for your Mac to recognize the newly installed applications.
  3. Next, open the app and click on the tab at the top. You should see updates for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
  4. If you don’t see updates for these apps yet, close the App Store and wait a few moments before opening it again. You just need to give the App Store some time to figure out that iWork is installed. If the App Store still isn’t showing updates for the three apps, try opening and running any of the apps, then return to the App Store.

When you see updates appear for these three apps, simply click next to each one to download the latest versions. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have the new version of iWork installed on your old Mac without spending a dime.

You will have two copies of each app (Pages, Keynote and Numbers). Simply delete the old versions and you will now only enjoy the new versions.
