After downloading that file take a deep breath because the next part is very important. These next details will guide you how to install iOS 6 on your device.
They are relatively simple, but be sure to follow them carefully.
1. First open the disk image, which is a .dmg file. Then, once it opens, locate the iPhone Software Update file, which is a .ipsw file. You will then want to get this file to your desktop. Remember, this is for Mac owners only. Windows users will need to use a tool like the one suggested by Lifehacker: 7-Zip to extract the file. The process is similar, but Windows users need to open an .hfs file within the .dmg file.
2. Next, you will want to make sure that iTunes is open and then connect your iPhone, iPod or iPod touch to your computer. Make sure it is selected in iTunes.
3. Then press and hold the option key for Mac users. For Windows users, hold down the shift key. At this point, you will want to click the Restore button. Again, be sure to make a backup of your content before doing this.
4. You will now be able to browse for the .ispw file and at this point you will want to select it and then grab some water as it starts the installation.
5. Enjoy iOS 6.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this setup usually doesn’t work for everyone. It will work for some of you and not for others. Fortunately, if that doesn’t work, the official consumer version of iOS 6 will be out for you to enjoy in just a few days.
