With the iPhone 6s, Apple introduced 3D Touch, a new pressure-sensitive display that lets users interact with the screen in incredible new ways. Apple may have launched 3D Touch as the main feature of the iPhone 6s, but using a jailbreak tweak we can get this 3D Touch functionality on older versions of the iPhone including the 6, 6 Plus and iPhone 5s.
note: This procedure requires that you have a jailbroken iOS. If you are using the latest iOS 10.2, you can refer to our excellent guide on how to Jailbreak iOS 10.2. If you’ve jailbroken and need help installing tweaks from Cydia, check out our convenient Cydia beginner’s guide.
How to Get 3D Touch on Old iPhones
note: We will be using the Jailbreak tweak “Peek-a-boo” from a Special Source. There are many alternatives available in Cydia but as written it is the only option compatible with the latest iOS 10.2 Jailbreak so we will use it.
- Open Cydiaswitch “Resources” Tap the tab and “To organise” > “Add“.
- To enter “http://repo.ioscreatix.com” (without the quotation marks) appears on the dialog box and tap on “.Add source“.
- Now that we have successfully added the source, open Cydia again and click “Call” tab. To search “Peek-a-Boo” and install this Jailbreak setup.
Springboard will be back in a while and voila, you can 3D Touch on your old iPhone! While you can launch 3D Touch, it’s better to spend some time configuring “Peek-a-boo” so it can work more accurately.
Configure Peek-a-boo Settings
Go to System “Settings” > “peek-a-boo” and set the Sensitivity slider to the number you want.
The higher the sensitivity, the greater the amount of finger taps required to trigger 3D Touch actions. In my experience Peek-a-boo works best when set to sensitivity. 80-110. Of course, you may need to tweak and experiment a bit based on your finger size and preference.
Peek and Pop are triggered by a hard and even harder press on the iPhone 6s, respectively. Since you don’t have a pressure sensitive hardware display on older iPhones, there’s a tool to trigger Peek. a certain amount of finger touch On the screen (sensitivity can be adjusted in Settings.) Increasing the amount of finger taps a little more will simulate the Pop action.
Where Peek-a-boo Works (and Where It Doesn’t)
Peek-a-boo replicates the 3D Touch functionality on older iPhones surprisingly well. For starters, you can: Tap the icons on your 3D Home screen and jump into quick actions supported by any app.
Also Peek-a-boo Works at control center Like the original 3D Touch on iPhone 6s, you can 3D Touch the flashlight icon to control the intensity of the flashlight.
works in Apple’s default apps Like Photos to Quickly Browse and Pop your pictures.
You can also quickly preview links in Safari, the App Store, or the Mail app. Third-party apps Works like a charm with 3D Touch support like Twitter or Instagram.
You can even 3D Touch. notification center quick response and even “Clear all notificationsThe ” button—a luxury you can only enjoy on iPhone 6s and later.
There are a few places where Peek-a-boo doesn’t work, though. First of all, 3D touch doesn’t seem to work to animate a live wallpaper. Next up, 3D Touching Apple’s keyboard doesn’t turn it into a cursor trackpad. Interestingly, 3D tapping on Google’s GBoard keyboard turns it into a cursor trackpad. Still need more reasons to love Gboard?
Also, I couldn’t bring up the multitasking menu on the iPhone by 3D tapping the far left side of the screen. Of course, all this can be a little finicky given the number of 3D Touch features Peek-a-boo brings to the table.
