How to Force Restart or Recovery, DFU Mode on iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus

Due to the absence of a home button on the iPhone X, many normal functions involving the use of the home button have been transferred to other buttons, including the power and volume buttons. Apple made these changes not only on the iPhone X, but also on the newly released iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Now, the previous methods you used (or still use on iPhone 7 and lower) to force restart your iPhone or put it into recovery mode or DFU mode will not work with iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X. you won’t need to perform these functions regularly, it’s good to know how you can do them. So, whether you are a prospective iPhone X buyer or current owner of iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, here is how you can force restart or enable Recovery and DFU mode on your new iPhone:

note: The power button on the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X is now officially known as the side button. So don’t be confused when I mention the side button in the tutorials below. The process is the same for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X, so from now on I will use the iPhone 8 for all examples and purposes.

Force Restart iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus

The process may seem a bit difficult at first, but if you follow the steps clearly, you can do it without any problems. To force restart (hard reset) your iPhone 8, Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button and then hold the Side Button until your iPhone restarts (restarts), then release the side button. The trick here is to perform all three steps in quick succession. You may need to hold down the side button for up to 10 seconds for the iPhone to restart.

Put Your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X into Recovery Mode

Getting the phone into recovery mode is a bit more difficult than a hard reset. Therefore, follow the steps carefully.

2. Now, repeat the steps we used for force restart. Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Side Button until your iPhone reboots (restarts). However, you will not let go of the side button just yet.

3. Release the side button when you see the Connect to iTunes logo on the iPhone’s screen.

4. Now launch iTunes on your computer and from here you can choose to update or restore your device.

Put Your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X into DFU Mode

Getting your iPhone 8 into DFU mode is even harder than putting it into recovery mode. So, I suggest you read the steps first and then try it on your device.

1. We’ll start with connecting Using the lightning cable, we connect our iPhone to our computer..

2. Now, Press and release the Volume Up buttonpress and release button Volume Down button and then press and hold Side Button until the screen goes black.

3. While the screen is still black, Quickly press and hold the Volume Down key for 5 seconds and then release the Side button but press and hold the Volume Down key for another 10 seconds and then release. Note that the screen should remain black throughout this entire process so if the phone reboots you will have to repeat the whole process until you get it right.

4. Hopefully, your iPhone’s screen is still black. Now, start iTunes and you should see a message that says “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode”. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes”. If you see this message, your iPhone 8 is now in DFU Mode.

Exiting Recovery Mode and DFU Mode

If there is a problem with your iPhone, you should follow the onscreen instructions and restore or update the device to fix it. However, if your iPhone is okay and you are trying to check if this process is working, it is very easy to exit recovery as well as DFU mode.

  • Exiting Recovery Mode

Getting out of recovery mode is pretty easy. only pPress and hold the side button until the “connect to iTunes” logo disappears and your phone restarts. When the device restarts, it exits the recovery mode.

  • Exiting DFU Mode

To exit DFU mode, press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then Press and Release Press and hold the Side Button until the Apple logo appears (indicates that your device has rebooted).

As you can see, Apple has complicated the process a bit, but once you get used to it it’s not that hard. You just need to set the right time to press your button. The main problem for me is that you will have to remember two sets of actions, one for the iPhone 8 and above, and the other for the iPhone 7 and below. I think Apple should change and introduce a uniform process for all iOS devices. But that’s my opinion, share yours on the matter in the comments section below.
