Any new software update on any device will have minor glitches, minor issues that cause users to not be able to download the update when they should. Windows 8.1, the free update for tablets, desktops and laptops running Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system, is no different.
Since its release, users have reported random issues with not being able to download the update. Here’s what to do when Windows tells you that your Windows 8.1 installation could not be completed.
Before continuing, it’s a good idea to simply apply the app by clicking or tapping on it and dragging it to the bottom of our screen. Then try the update again. This may solve your problem and save you from having to continue with the rest of this process. If that still didn’t help, go ahead.
If you see the above error on your screen, the first thing you will want to do is restart your Windows 8 devices and try again. Don’t forget to save all the work you do in the background before restarting. After restarting the app.
If you are still having problems downloading the update. You will need to open the Windows 8 Command Prompt. Navigate to by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard or by pressing the Windows button at the bottom of your device’s screen.
Go anywhere on the Start Screen and click the button.
Now find the option in the list of installed apps. Do not left click on it. Instead, choose from the menu at the bottom. Tablet users should place their fingers on the Command Prompt to see the app menu and then pull down the app slightly.
Type ” in the menu and press enter on your keyboard.
Now type ” and press enter again on your keyboard.
Now go back to the Desktop and open a file window. Navigate to the following location by manually typing in the address bar or by copying and pasting into the address bar in a file window: C:\Windows\Software Distribution. Delete everything inside that folder.
Now go back to Command Prompt and type ” and hit enter.
Then type ” and press enter.
Now go to the Windows Store and try to download Windows 8.1 again.

By now, you should be able to download Windows 8.1 without any problems. Make sure you have a stable internet connection and your Windows 8 device is plugged in.
