How to Fix No Sound in iPad Apps

Is your iPad not making sounds in apps? Sometimes the iPad plays sound in some apps or when headphones are plugged in, but not in all apps through the iPad speakers.

The iPad has an interesting mute feature; this may result in no sound from certain apps through your iPad speaker even though the volume is turned up and you can hear the sound through the headphones.

This Soft Mute ‘feature’ turns off app music and sounds, but not sound from Hulu or Netflix; this makes it difficult to diagnose especially since your headphones are still working, but fortunately it is easy to fix.

How to Fix No Sound in iPad Apps

One of the first things you can try is to restart the iPad. This can fix many problems in less than a minute. If that doesn’t work, you should also try plugging and unplugging the headphones. Sometimes this will fix audio issues like blowing canned air into the headphone jack port.

If this does not fix the problem, you need to unmute the iPad using the instructions below. Some apps may make a sound even when the iPad is muted. Strange, but that’s how it happens.

Fix no sound in iPad apps.

  1. Swipe up from the bottom edge of iPad. You have to do this from the very edge of the screen.
  2. This opens the Control Center.
  3. Look for the mute icon. It may appear as a waist or a bell with a cut on it.
  4. Tap the bell to unmute your iPad.

You can also control the volume on this screen and turn up the volume to make sure you can hear it.

Another thing to check on older iPads is to see if the mute button on the side is on. This is a small toggle button that you have to turn to turn up the iPad’s volume.

Control Volume in iPad Apps

Another thing you should try to fix no sound from apps on your iPad is to see if there are sound options inside the app.

Sometimes you can turn off an app’s music or background sounds using an app’s settings. This is very common in many mobile games that allow you to turn off some or all of the in-game audio.

  1. Open the app, go to the main menu and then tap on settings and search for anything related to sound.

While doing this, you should try to turn up the volume in the application by using the side volume keys. Sometimes the volume may go down and this can fix the problem.

What Should You Do If You Still Have No Sound on Your iPad?

The next step is to back up your iPad to iTunes and then perform a factory reset to see if that fixes the issues. From there you can restore a backup and get back to using your iPad with voice.

You can also set up an appointment to get help from Apple. If your iPad is less than a year old, it should have a warranty, but even if it’s older, Apple support can most likely help you fix simple issues for free in-store or possibly over the phone. Contact Apple here.
