Microsoft Store in Windows 10 notifies you when it has finished applying an automatic update to an app or service. While these notifications are often annoying to deal with, they serve an important purpose. Thanks to them, you know that automatic updates work smoothly. But what if you no longer receive these notifications?
There can be multiple reasons why Microsoft Store cannot send update notifications. You may have unknowingly blocked notifications for the Microsoft Store, which is pretty easy to fix. Or it may indicate a problem with the auto-update functionality of the Microsoft Store in general; this can be a bit of a hassle.
Let’s explore fixes that can help you resolve Microsoft Store update notifications not showing problems on your Windows 10 computer.
Note: Since you only get update notifications after Microsoft Store has finished applying automatic updates, you may want to bookmark this post and try each fix in a few days.
Enable Microsoft Store Notifications
First, make sure Microsoft Store is configured to offer update notifications on your Windows 10 PC. Go to Start menu > Settings > System > Notifications & Actions. Next, go to ‘Get notifications from these senders’ and turn on the switch next to Microsoft Store if it’s disabled.
This should prompt Microsoft Store to send notifications when it has finished performing an automatic update in the background after this.
Enable Automatic App Updates
Next, check if Microsoft Store is configured to update apps automatically. For obvious reasons, you won’t see any update notifications otherwise.
Go to the Microsoft Store and then click the More icon (three dots) in the upper right corner of the window. Follow by clicking on Settings.
Under App Updates, turn on the switch next to Automatically Update Apps if disabled.
Microsoft Store should send you a notification every time it performs an update for an app or service.
Run the Microsoft Store Troubleshooter
Didn’t find any problem with Microsoft Store’s notification or auto update settings? If so, consider running the built-in Windows 10 troubleshooter for Microsoft Store.
Open the start menu and then go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Then click Additional Troubleshooters at the bottom of the screen.
On the following screen, click on Windows Store Apps and then Run the Troubleshooter.
Follow the onscreen prompts to fix problems with Microsoft Store.
Enable Background Permissions
Microsoft Store must have the necessary permissions to run in the background on your PC. This is usually not an issue as these permissions are provided by default. But it’s always good to double check.
Open the start menu. Next, select Settings > Privacy > Background Apps. Under ‘Choose which apps can run in the background’ section, turn on the switch next to Microsoft Store if it’s disabled.
Reset Microsoft Store
Try resetting the Microsoft Store. Right-click on the start menu, select Apps and Features, and select Microsoft Store from the list under Apps and Features. Then click Advanced Options.
Scroll down and click Reset under the Reset section. Click Reset again to confirm.
Then launch Microsoft Store and sign in if prompted. Follow up by checking your notification and auto-update settings to make sure everything looks good.
Clear Microsoft Store Cache
If resetting Microsoft Store didn’t fix the problem, try clearing its cache. This should clear unnecessary data that is preventing Microsoft Store from automatically applying updates. To do this, type wsreset Click the Start menu, then click Open.
You will see an empty Command Prompt window on the screen; Wait for it to finish clearing the Microsoft Store cache.
You should then see the Microsoft Store start automatically. If prompted, sign in to the app. This should completely fix any issues with notifications or automatic updates.
Re-Register Microsoft Store
You can also try to re-register Microsoft Store. Right-click the start button and select Windows PowerShell.
Follow by adding the command as listed below:
Get-AppXPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
Press Enter to run the command. This should re-register the Microsoft Store.
If you want to re-register Microsoft Store for multiple users, use the following command instead:
Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
When you’re done, restart your computer, launch Microsoft Store, and sign in if prompted.
