If you’re trying to update Clash of Clans on an Android device but are having trouble, there are a few possible fixes. Either something went wrong with the Google Play Store or something Supercell did. They blame Google Play and advise users to clear Store cache or data to fix the problem. Basic instructions are provided above, but below are screenshots to help those who are having trouble.
Instructions
To fix the “your device is not compatible with this version” error message of the Clash of Clans update, try clearing the Google Play Store cache and then data. Then restart Google Play Store and accept the update again.
Pull down the notification bar on your Android device and hit the gear-shaped settings icon or find “settings” in the app tray. From here go to Applications or Application Manager. Then scroll down and find Google Play Store. Select it and tap “Clear Cache or Data” as shown below.
This should delete everything and get rid of any corrupted files causing this issue. Supercell claims this will fix the bug. Multiple comments suggest it works. Now go back and download the update.
Other options
However, if that doesn’t fix the issue, another option is to uninstall and reinstall Clash of Clans. Yes, it sounds scary and no one wants to lose their entire village by uninstalling the game. you will not. Obviously, proceed at your own risk and be careful.
If the game has been backed up to Google+ or Google Games (an option in settings) your progress will be saved. So you can uninstall Clash, reinstall and restore your progress just by going to settings and connecting to Google+; will restore your village in less than 10 seconds. However, if you’ve never connected the two, this won’t work. So don’t uninstall Clash of Clans unless you know it’s backed up. The guide above covers a few details about porting the game to a new phone, which is how you can save progress. However, if you cannot open the game, you cannot connect it to Google Games. Do not uninstall Clash of Clans if you do not know that it was saved.
Solution
This is a big problem. Supercell states that clearing the Google Play Store cache is your only option and should fix all problems. They are currently exploring other options and will offer additional information if available.
At the end of the day, did clearing the cache or data fix the problem for you? Let us know in the comments below. Those who fix it in other ways feel free to share below. The December update was loaded with content and a Christmas theme. Expect a bug fix update with the removal of the winter theme in 2017.
