How to Fix Bad iPhone XR Battery Life

If your iPhone XR’s battery starts to drain quickly, there are a few things you should try before contacting Apple’s customer support.

Many iPhone XR users are using their new smartphones full time, but others are facing battery drain issues.

Abnormal iPhone battery consumption is a common problem and sometimes it is related to bad hardware. For the most part, however, it is not related to the software on board.

If your iPhone XR is barely charging, your battery may be faulty. If your battery percentages are dropping rapidly, you may need to bring the device to an Apple Store or local store to have it checked.

Your device is backed by a one-year warranty, and if it’s a technical issue, Apple should fix it or replace your phone for free.

If you can still use your phone and your battery seems to be draining faster than usual, after a few minutes of work you should be able to fix the problem on your own.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through some of the steps you should take to fix bad iPhone XR battery life. We will also provide some tips that can help prevent problems in the future.

Restart your phone

If you start noticing strange battery drain, you need to restart your iPhone XR. Turn off the phone, leave it off for a minute and turn it back on. This will usually fix the problem.

Use Low Power Mode

When your iPhone XR’s battery is drained up to 20%, you’ll be prompted to turn on Low Power Mode. Low Power Mode turns off essential functions like Hey Siri, automatic downloads and mail retrieval to conserve your battery life.

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for your battery to drop to 20% to use Low Power Mode. You can enable it anytime from your device’s Settings or Control Center.

If you start noticing a strange discharge or just want to save battery, here is how to enable Low Power Mode on your iPhone XR:

We highly recommend adding a shortcut to Low Power Mode in Control Center. Control Center is the menu that appears when you swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. Here’s how to add Low Power Mode to Control Center:

Now you can quickly turn Low Power Mode on and off whenever you need it.

Manage Your Screen

The iPhone XR’s 6.1-inch LCD can suck up your battery life if you’re not careful. If your screen is bright for no reason, your device may be draining its battery faster than it should.

Auto-Brightness works well, but there are times when your phone’s sensors can misread the media. If you’re having major battery life issues, try manually adjusting the display to suit your lighting conditions. To do this, you need to turn off Auto-Brightness:

You will need to manually adjust the screen brightness of your iPhone XR after turning it off. To do this, simply pull up the Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen) and adjust your screen as needed.

You can also adjust the brightness from the Settings app if you enter the Display & Brightness section.

Control Your Apps

Your apps can drain the battery if you don’t manage them properly.

To properly take care of the apps that consume the most battery on your phone, you need to go to the settings of your iPhone XR:

On this screen, you’ll see a list of apps that are hurting your battery life the most. You will see the apps you use the most, but you can also catch a rogue app. If you see an app that consumes a ton of battery that you rarely use, you need to investigate further.

Try deleting the app first and see if your battery life returns to normal. If you don’t see any response, you can reinstall the app.

You’ll want to check the App Store for the latest software updates. Developers are releasing support updates for iPhone XR and iOS 12, and the latest version may fix the issue.

use wifi

Using your cellular data (LTE, 4G) can drain battery life especially when you’re in an area with poor service, so be sure to use Wi-Fi whenever possible.

Try Airplane Mode

If you start noticing excessive battery consumption on your iPhone XR, try turning on Airplane Mode.

Airplane Mode is accessible through your Settings app or your device’s Control Center. When you turn it on, it kills your Bluetooth, cellular data, and Wi-Fi. Leave it on for a bit and see if the battery dies.

While in these areas, try putting your phone in Airplane Mode until you return to an area with good signal.

Turn off Lift to Wake

iPhone XR’s Raise to Wake feature automatically turns on the screen when you turn on the phone. It’s handy, but try turning it off to save battery.
