We’ve been dealing with terrible AirPods battery life after a few years of use, and now that we’ve upgraded to AirPods 2, we’ve found another way to get even better battery life from the new models.
You can’t replace the AirPods battery, and Apple will only sell you a spare AirPod for an obscene price. Try these tips to get better AirPods battery life and how to fix bad battery life on AirPods and AirPods 2 with wireless charging case.
With AirPods 2, you can expect up to five hours of listening time or up to three hours of talk time on a single charge. You should get 5 hours of listening and two hours of talk time on the original AirPods. The AirPods case offers up to 24 hours of use on a single charge.

Reset Your AirPods
The fastest way to fix bad AirPods battery life is to reset AirPods. This process takes about 15 seconds and when it’s done you should reconnect the AirPods to your iPhone. This won’t help if your AirPods battery life is completely drained from years of use, but it will help if you experience AirPods or AirPods 2 battery drain after installing an iOS 12.2 update or adding something new to the mix.
First, we will remove AirPods from your device. Then we will reset them and reconnect them to your iPhone or iPad to get started.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap on Bluetooth.
- Tap the little i icon to the right of the AirPods.
- Tap on Forget This Device.
Now that your AirPods are disconnected from your iPhone, it’s time to reset them.
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Wait 15 seconds and then open the cover.
- Press and hold the button on the back of the chassis until the status light flashes orange and then white.

Use One AirPod at a Time
The trick I use to beat bad AirPods battery life is to use one AirPod at a time. This helps with phone calls where my AirPods battery life is at its worst.
Instead of wearing both AirPods whenever you’re on a call or want to listen to music, just plug one in and use it until it dies. Then you can replace and charge the first AirPod while using the second.
It’s not a perfect solution for music, but it helps with searches and audiobooks. You get up to 3 hours of listening time and up to 2 hours of talk time in just 15 minutes.
Turn off Hey Siri on AirPods 2
AirPods 2 already offer better battery life for calls thanks to Bluetooth 5.0, but you can make it even better by turning off Hey Siri on your iPhone or iPad.
Hey Siri always listens for you to say “Hey Siri” which shortens battery life. This is a feature only available on AirPods 2 and it will only help you with AirPods 2 battery life.
To do this, you need to turn off Hey Siri on your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Siri & Search.
- Turn Listen for “Hey Siri” off.
If you’re using multiple devices that work with Hey Siri, you’ll need to turn off the device on each one for this to work. You can still double-tap the AirPods to use Siri. If you regularly use your Apple AirPods with the Apple Watch, you may need to turn it off there as well.
