Recently, while working on my Windows 10 laptop, I heard some random noises from the speaker. The sound was quite annoying as it came randomly and I did not connect or disconnect any devices. So why was my computer ringing? Find the answer in this post and also learn how to fix random sound problems on Windows 10 PC.
When your computer suddenly rattles or beeps, you’ll wonder what program is making the noise in the background. Even I was. So, I present you this post.
Let’s check out the various ways to find the program responsible for the random sound on Windows 10 computers.
1. Restart the Computer
Sometimes, it is a temporary issue caused by a bug in third-party programs. A simple reboot should fix this.
2. Check the Volume Mixer
The volume mixer in Windows 10 shows all the programs currently using your audio devices. To find the program that is causing the random noises, you need to open it and get its help. Once you have that, you can disable its sound.
To use this method, right-click on the sound icon located on the taskbar. Select Turn on volume mixer.
You will see various soundbars. If an app is making a sound, the bar displays a green color. Keep looking at it for a while to identify the app. In my case, it was the Lightkey app (which, by the way, is a great text prediction tool for Windows). I had Audio assist enabled for this. As you can see, the application appears in the audio mixer.
Pro Tip: Many users have suggested that apps like Discord and Windows Defender are also responsible for the random ding sound. Check your settings.
3. Watch Audio
If the above method did not help, you can use the Process Monitor tool to find the exact program that produces the sound. To monitor applications that produce sound, you need to configure the tool. Don’t get confused. Here are the detailed steps.
Stage 1: Download the Process Monitor tool from the link given below.
step 2: Open it and click on the Procmon file to open it.
Stage 3: A Process Monitor Filter window will open. If it doesn’t, click on Filter at the top and select Filter.
Step 4: Click the first dropdown box and select Path. Next, select Contains. Type .wav in the text box. Finally, click Apply. We added .wav because most of the notification sounds are in .wav format.
step 5: Click on File. Make sure Capture Events is checked.
Step 6: Keep the Process Monitor tool running in the background. Don’t turn it off. Wait for a while until you hear the sound. Then look under Action Name and Path to find the app that sent the notification sound.
4. Run the Audio Troubleshooter
You can also try running the native audio troubleshooter to find audio driver issues, if any. To run it, follow these steps:
Stage 1: Open Settings on your computer. Go to Update & Security.
Fly: Press Windows key + I to open Settings from any screen.
step 2: Click Troubleshoot from the left sidebar. Next, click on Playing Sounds on the right side and hit Run the troubleshooter.
Stage 3: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
5. Fix Mouse
Many Windows 10 users have reported that the reason behind the random connecting and disconnecting sound may be a faulty mouse. So, disconnect it for a while and see if the issue is resolved. You can also try changing your mouse’s USB port.
If you don’t want to switch the mouse yet, you can turn off the connect and disconnect sound. However, this will apply to any device you connect to your PC.
To do this, follow these steps:
Stage 1: Open Control Panel on your computer and select Small icons in View by.
Step 2: Click Sound.
Stage 3: Click the Sounds tab. Under Program events, look for Device Connection and Device Disconnection. Change the Sounds to None. Press OK.
Pro Tip: If the problem is not caused by connecting or disconnecting an external device, you can test other sounds in this window. When you find a matching sound, turn it off.
6. Reinstall Audio Driver
An older version of the sound driver can also cause inconvenience. Updating or reinstalling the audio driver may fix the problem. We have covered the steps to reinstall the audio driver in detail.
Could it be a hardware problem
The solutions mentioned above are useful when the problem is mostly software related or an external device like USB or mouse. If the sound is coming from inside your computer, it may be a hardware issue. If you have a warranty or are visiting a computer repair shop nearby, we recommend filing a complaint with the respective brand’s customer support.
