How to Enable Time-Based Dark Mode on Android Pie Devices

With the release of Android 8.0 Oreo on Pixel devices, Google allowed users to set dark mode on Android based on their wallpapers. However, this feature has been kept exclusive to Pixel devices and unless you are using the cracked Pixel launcher, there was no way to get this feature on your Android device. Now, with Android Pie on Pixel devices, Google allows users to dynamically switch between dark and light mode based on the time of day. The best part about this new feature is that it is not limited to Pixel and can be enabled on Android device running on Android Pie. So, if you’re interested in this feature, here’s how you can enable it:

How to Enable Time-Based Dark Mode on Android Pie

As I mentioned, your device needs to be updated to Android Pie for this feature to work. This will not work if your device is running on lower versions of Android. Also, just like the wallpaper-based dark mode, time-based dark mode is not a system-wide dark mode and only works in notification panel, app drawer, and the volume and power menus. Still, it’s a nice touch and I enjoy this feature on the Pixel 3 XL.

Currently, to enable the dark theme, users have to open Settings app and go to Display -> Advanced -> Device theme and choose between Auto, Light and Dark mode. The automatic mode changes the theme from dark to light based on your wallpaper selection, while the other two are manual options. But if you want to enable dark theme based on time, you will not find this setting here as it is hidden in developer settings panel. Let’s see how you can enable this:

2 dark modes

  • Open the Settings app and Tap System -> Advanced and Developer.

5 dark modes

  • Here, Scroll down to find the “Night Mode” option and tap on it. You will see a popup that allows you to manually always keep the dark mode on/off or “Auto” which activates the dark mode depending on the time of day.

6 dark modes

Now, depending on where you are, dark mode may kick in at a different time than mine. Automatically activated at 7 PM for me in India.. One thing to note here is that the feature is in developer options and not a full-fledged version, so it can crash on you sometimes. However, it mostly worked perfectly on the Pixel 3, Pixel 2, and OnePlus 6.
