You may be aware that watching a screen at night can be harmful to your eyes, which in turn affects your health. This is because the blue light on the screen disrupts your natural (circadian) rhythm and prevents you from falling asleep easily at night. Major operating systems like macOS and Windows naturally offered night modes, but unfortunately Chrome OS didn’t have such an option until recently. Google recently posted a new update to the Chrome OS Developer Channel that brings a native “Nightlight” feature. So, if you’re a Chrome OS user who likes to run his Chromebook at night, read on as we tell you. How to enable Night Light on Chromebooks:
Enable Nightlight on Chrome OS
note: I tried the below method on me Asus Chromebook Flip C100PAand it worked as expected. Also, this requires you to change your channel to the Developer build, which will strongly wash your device and thus delete all your data. It is recommended that you back up important data on your device before proceeding.
- The first step is to make sure your device is in the Developer Channel. To do this, go to: Settings and click on hamburger menu button to reveal the sidebar. Here, click “About Chrome OS”.
- In the About Chrome OS section, click on it. “Detailed build information”. It will now show you what channel your Chromebook is currently on. click “Change channel”.

note: The above option is only available to the owner user account. If you are using a different account, log out and log back in using the owner account.
- A list of various channels will appear, including Stable, Beta, and Developer. choose “Developer – undecided” Select from the list and click on it. “Change channel”.

- Now that you’ve done that, head back to the settings page. The system will now update your device to the developer channel. Once complete, you will be prompted to reboot the device. click “Restart” to continue.

note: The current channel will still show as Stable. However, when you reboot your device, it will be changed to “Version xxxx (Official Build) dev”.
- After restarting your device, open Google Chrome and enter the following Chrome flag in the address bar:
chrome://flags/#ash-enable-night-light
A screen should come up with various Google flags. under the hood “Enable Night Light”click “Enable”. After doing this, you may be prompted to restart your Chromebook. click “Restart now” to apply the changes.
- Now that you’ve done that, go to: Settings -> Device -> Displays. Scroll down for option Night lightand enable the toggle next to it.

- Alternatively, you can also: set a schedule For “Sunset to Sunrise” Night Light or define your own “Custom Schedule”. In addition, you also have the option to: change color temperatureby changing the overall temperature of the color.

The inclusion of Night Light is a great feature for Chrome OS users. The midnight owl helps users operate their Chromebook more comfortably in the dark. While this feature has been available on multiple platforms for a while, it’s good to see it rolling out to Chrome OS as well. Note that the feature is currently only in Developer build and it may take a few more update cycles for the feature to finally migrate to Stable build.
