This guide explains how to enable LG V30 Always On Display. For whatever reason, this extremely useful feature isn’t obvious when you pick up the phone. What is the Always On display and how to turn it on? We have all the details below.
Similar to newer phones like the LG G5 and Galaxy S8, the V30 has an Always On display. This illuminates a small portion of the screen 24/7. You are shown useful information such as time, date, battery life and incoming notifications. Even when you turn off the screen, this information is still visible.
LG’s always on display gives you helpful information at a glance and doesn’t require a lot of battery life. In fact, this could potentially increase battery life. With all that said, here’s how to use and customize the Always On Display for LG V30.
How To Enable LG V30 Always-On Display
LG claims the AOD feature is extremely battery friendly. In fact, LG said it consumes less than 5% of battery life during an 8-hour workday. Use this feature instead of turning on your phone a hundred times a day.
- Pull down the notification bar and press the button or find settings in the App Tray
- Choose the one closest to the top
- Scroll down and
- Or tap on Always On Display.
Once you turn this feature on, you’ll want to tap the option in settings again to go in and customize it. It only takes a few seconds and there are many options. LG has added nine different clocks, backgrounds, colors, and the option to add messages to the always-on display.
Tap the gear-shaped “content settings” button inside the Always On display section and choose from nine different styles. Some are predefined, others have additional customization options.
Additionally, we recommend scrolling down and enabling the “Brighter Display” option. This makes the always-on display brighter and easier to see, but can also reduce battery life. Choose the best for you. LG has added an option for daily timeouts, so it’s not on at night or while you’re working.
Other details
Having the screen on 24/7 will reduce battery life, but only by a small percentage. If you notice that it is consuming too much battery, turn off the “brighter screen” option. The Always-On display will be dim, but still easy to see.
At the same time, studies claim that the average smartphone user turns on the screen about 140 times a day, or even more. Most of the time it’s just to check the time, date or look at notifications. By turning on the LG V30 always-on display, you always get this information and you do not need to turn on the display more than 100 times a day. So yes, this can actually increase battery life.
When shutting down, the Always-On screen detects this and turns off when you put the phone in your pocket or bag. So you get the best of both worlds. The screen turns off completely when needed, but shows useful information the rest of the time. Hopefully LG adds more options and customizations to this in the near future. If so, we will update this post with full details.
