How to Enable Chromium-Based Edge Browsing

If you are using the old-fashioned Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge that came with Windows 10, you may be aware of the caret browsing feature they offer. Microsoft has finally brought the feature to its latest Chromium-based Edge browser.

If you are not aware, Caret scan a feature that places a caret directly on web pages, similar to that seen in word processors. In this way, users can select content on any web page simply by using the keyboard. This makes it more suitable for people who don’t use a mouse on their laptop, and using the touchpad isn’t the most complicated way to select large chunks of text in my honest opinion.

It’s worth noting that the Caret scan is currently only available in Edge Canary. But don’t worry! The feature will be coming to Dev Channel and Beta Channel soon.

Enable Caret Browsing in Chromium-Based Edge

1. Download the latest version of Edge Canary to get started. In Edge Canary’s address bar, enter: border://flags. Now you will get a page similar to the Chrome flags page, which makes perfect sense since this browser is based on Chromium.

2. Type in the search bar Enable Cursor Browsing and choose activated from the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can access the flag by pasting it. edge://flags/#edge-caret-scan into your address bar.

After the browser restarts, you will have access to caret browsing on your Edge Canary.

3. To start the cursor scan, press the F7 key on your keyboard. This will place a cursor in your browser similar to what you see in the picture below. If you don’t want the feature, you can turn it off by pressing the F7 key again.
