The battle of subscriptions and dubbing is never-ending, and people will go for what they prefer. Because I enjoy the original sound of a movie or TV show, I fall under the category of reservists in this war. That’s why I watch non-regional content with subtitles. Whether you prefer or turn on subtitles for your non-native languages, subtitles are useful even if you know them. And in this article, I will show you how to enable and customize subtitles on Amazon Prime Video for the best viewing experience.
Enable and Customize Subtitles on Amazon Prime Video
The good thing about Amazon Prime Video is that it offers both basic and advanced customization options. In this article, we will show you the steps for both basic and advanced options. You can jump to the section you want by clicking the links below:
- Basic Customization of Subtitles on Amazon Prime Video

Basic Subtitle Customization on Amazon Prime Video
1. Play the movie or TV show you want to watch and click the subtitle icon.
2. Here you can select the subtitle language if multiple subtitle languages are supported. Click “Subtitle Settings” to customize subtitles.
3. Here you can choose the size of the subtitles and different subtitle preset.
Note: We’ll learn more about customizing subtitle presets in the next section.
4. You can see the changes you applied in the example below. Select the one you want and then click the “X” button to save the changes.
Advanced Subtitle Customization on Amazon Prime Video
If you want more control over your subtitle customization, you can use the advanced subtitle customization features. The best part is that you can save presets and switch between them instantly.
1. Click the Profile icon, then click Account & Settings.
2. Now, click to open the “Subtitles” tab.
3. Here, under the “Your Presets” section, you will see the Default preset along with three other subtitle presets.
4. Click the “Edit” button below a preset to customize it.
5. As you can see in the screenshot below, there are quite a few options you can change here. You can choose the color, size, font, appearance and even opacity of the subtitles.
6. When your customization is finished, click the “Save” button to save the changes.
As I showed in the first part of this article, you can customize and save three preset groups and switch between them using the subtitle icon while playing a video.

I like Amazon Prime video’s approach to customizing subtitles more than Netflix subtitle customization. On Netflix, you can only have one type of subtitles for a profile. There may be four in the Prime video.
While that isn’t a major factor when comparing the two popular video streaming giants, I love these kinds of quality-of-life improvements. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
