How to put accents on capital letters? It’s a question many people ask themselves. While not mandatory, knowing how to do it can quickly become necessary, for example in the context of your job (especially if you work remotely in telework). Nothing too complicated. In French, uppercase letters are accented just like lowercase letters, and the same is true for umlauts and cedilla.
“How are you?”, there is a typo (also called a typo) from the beginning in your sentence. If our keyboards were equipped with these special characters, the problem would not arise. Unfortunately, this is not the case and in some cases, you will need to see the hand show agility that puts the fingers to the test.
How to add accents to capital letters?
There are several ways to put accents in capital letters from any software (Excel, Word, etc.). Essential keyboard shortcuts for people who don’t have a number pad on their computer. ASCII codes, but also the Windows character table. Regarding the umlaut and thinning accent in uppercase letters, you can get them using the same key combination as lowercase letters.
Using keyboard shortcuts
Let’s start with keyboard shortcuts. This method is ideal if, as we said earlier, you have a computer without a number pad. The numbers on your keyboard are therefore placed at the top of your keyboard.
It consists of using two consecutive keyboard shortcuts. one after another. For typing the first combination and the second capital letter, which gives the desired accent. Here are the keyboard shortcuts:
- À (capital accent) = Ctrl + Alt + 7 then Shift + A
- É (sharp big e) = Ctrl + 4 then Shift + E
- È (capital letter and serious emphasis) = Ctrl + Alt + 7 then Shift + E
- Ç (capital c cedilla) = Ctrl+, then Shift+C
with ASCII codes
The second method is to use the American Standard Code for Information Exchange. This computer coding standard, which emerged in the 1960s, is the most influential to date. Also known by the acronym ASCII, it allows you to add emphasis to capital letters. It is very easy to use, requires your keyboard to be equipped with a numeric keypad.
Press the Alt key to make it work, then enter a combination of numbers without releasing it. When you’re done, simply release the Alt key for the accented capital letter to appear.
- TO (capital accent) = Alt + 0192
- É (large e with narrow accent) = Alt + 0201
- È (capital letters and serious emphasis) = Alt + 0200
- ç (capital c cedilla) = Alt + 0199
- Ù (uppercase u heavy accent) = Alt + 0217
Using Special Character Map in Windows
Another solution for adding accents to your capital letters. Slightly more boring than the previous two, but equally effective. If you have a computer running Windows, Microsoft has considered integrating a special character table. To access, simply follow these steps:
- Open the Windows search tool by pressing the Windows key + S keys simultaneously.
- Type “character map” or “charm map” in the search bar.
- Then you should see the “Character Map” app. Click on it.
- The character map opens in a new window.
- Select the character you want, then click copy to insert it into your text.
Hopefully, these tips will get you to finally start your sentences with the right foot. If these methods seem complicated to you, you can always switch from Windows to a device running macOS. Embedding accents in uppercase is much simpler: long press SHIFT + letter and the accents appear in a popup. Do you know any other ways to add accents to capital letters?
