How to Easily Find File Size on iPhone and iPad

iPhones have never had a simple interface for checking the file size of pictures on your device. Users had to use third-party gallery apps or upload their images to Google Photos or something similar to be able to control the file size. However, there is actually a much easier way to check the file sizes of photos, and you won’t even have to leave the Photos app to use it. In case you weren’t aware, Shortcuts is an Apple-made iPhone app that lets you create your own routines to simplify the repetitive tasks you perform on your iPhone or iPad, thereby improving your overall experience. It’s worth mentioning that the Shortcuts app will be pre-installed if you’re running it. beta version of iOS 13.

1. Install the Shortcuts app (Free) from the App Store. As I mentioned earlier, you can safely skip this step if you are using the developer beta or public beta of iOS 13.

2. Open the app and tap the “+” icon located at the top right corner of the app or “create shortcut” option. Assign the desired name for the shortcut, toggle button “Show in Share Table” and select the media types for which you should see the shortcut. I chose “Files”, “Media” and “Images” as this guide focuses on media files.

3. Now that you have created a shortcut, you need to set an action for it. To do this, tap on it. “Add Action” button that appears when you open and type the shortcut “Get details of files” in the search box.

5. After doing this, you will see the action as shown in the image below. Tap the blue “Detail” and select “File Size”. File Extension, Creation Date, Last Modified Date, etc. if you want. You can also set other actions such as

6. Now we need to define a custom action to make the file size appear as a notification. You can do the same by creating a new action called “Show notifications” You can find it by searching for “Notification” in the search box.

7. Note that when you create a notification, the default text that appears with it is “Hello World”. You can set it to something meaningful as you can see in the image above. Don’t forget to select the variable “Details of Files” this will show the output of the previous action in the notification.

Select the file whose size you want to know and tap the Share button to trigger the notification. On the Share page, select the Shortcut we created and you will get a notification showing you the size of the file.
