iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, Apple’s latest software updates for iPhone and iPad, are now rolling out and bring many new features. In iOS 14, you’ll be able to add widgets to your home screen, watch videos in picture-in-picture mode, and use a new Apple-made language translation app. In iPadOS 14, you’ll be able to manually type in text boxes and use a redesigned search experience. And both software updates offer improvements for Maps, Messages, Safari and Siri.
Here’s what you need to know to download and install new updates. If you want to know which devices support each update, check out our listings at the bottom of this article.
How to install iOS 14 and iPadOS 14
- Open the Settings app on your device and tap “General”.
- Then tap “Software Update”
- You should see a notification describing the update. (If you don’t see the notification, try again soon.) Tap “Download & Install” and follow the instructions from there. The update may also have already been downloaded to your device in the background – in this case, simply tap “Install” to start the process.
- Note that you will not be able to use your device at all while installing the update. The update can take a while to install – 15 minutes or more in my experience – so I sometimes wait until the evening for the update to install overnight.
