Facebook and Instagram each have their own dedicated user base, and the two don’t always meet eye to eye. While a few Facebook users hardly ever use Instagram, many younger users are increasingly turning away from motherhood in favor of the arguably more popular social media platform. So, if you only use one of the platforms or don’t want to link Facebook and Instagram, read on. This guide will tell you how to unlink Facebook from Instagram.
Guide to Unlink Facebook and Instagram (2021)
Linking your Instagram account to your Facebook profile means you can share posts and stories directly from Instagram to Facebook. However, if you don’t want this functionality, use the guide below to unlink two social media platforms. You can also disconnect Facebook Messenger from Instagram if you don’t want the unified new messaging experience. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at how you can remove Facebook and Facebook Messenger integrations from Instagram.
What Happens When You Disconnect Facebook From Instagram?
Removing Facebook from Instagram keeps your social media profiles separate. If this sounds like something you want, follow the guide below to unlink the two apps. Before you do that, though, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- First, unlinking ensures that Instagram doesn’t automatically suggest you follow your Facebook friends on IG. What’s more, people you follow on Instagram don’t automatically appear in your ‘friend’ or ‘follow’ suggestions on Facebook. Unlinking the two also stops cross-account logins; this means that logging in to one service does not automatically log you into the other.
- Second, when you unlink your Facebook and Instagram accounts, you won’t be able to automatically post to either site. However, your old auto-shared posts will remain on both platforms even after the unlinking is complete. Separating the two accounts will only ensure that automatic sharing will no longer occur in the future.
- Finally, removing your Facebook profile from your Instagram account will also remove Facebook Messenger integration with the photo sharing app. This means that you can no longer take advantage of Facebook’s much-launched cross-app communication.
note: You can unlink Facebook and Instagram only using Instagram app and website. Function not available on Facebook (app or website).
Unlink Facebook and Instagram Using Instagram Website

Disconnect Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger
Facebook rolled out the cross-messaging feature late last year, combining the messaging capabilities of Facebook and Instagram. Now if you want to continue logging into your Instagram account using Facebook without connecting your Messenger and DMs, you can do so easily. It also lets you post to Facebook and Instagram simultaneously if you want. Here’s how to disconnect your Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger:
- Go to Instagram settings as described above. Then go to ‘Privacy -> Messages‘.

- Under Message Controls, you’ll see options to customize who can message you from Facebook. Here, tap on each option individually and choose the least invasive option in each case; this, ‘Receiving Request‘. Of course, you can allow your friends to message you on both platforms, and that’s entirely up to you.

This will disconnect your Instagram and Facebook Messenger DMs and prevent annoying messages from strangers. You can learn how to disable Facebook Messenger and get rid of constant messages from random users.
