How to Disable New URL Copy and Paste Feature in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft recently revamped the way it handles web URLs in the Chromium-based Edge browser. With the change, Microsoft Edge started pasting URLs as a hyperlinked title instead of plain text. While a hyperlinked headset may serve better in certain use cases, a significant number of Edge users, including myself, are dissatisfied with it. Today you will learn how to restore the old URL paste mechanism in Edge.

Disable Edge’s New URL Copy and Paste Feature

What exactly does Edge’s new paste feature do?

Web browsers usually paste the entire web address when you paste a URL. Microsoft decided to replace the URL with the title of the page as the anchor text. As a result, pasted URLs started to look like this:

If you think this is a harmless change, I object. The biggest annoyance I found with this approach was how it messed up embedding YouTube links. Even ignoring the functionality of it, the new behavior has been hard on Edge users with no warnings or indications. Because of this sneaky change under the hood, some users even third-party apps are suspected of causing thiswhich is definitely not the case.

Remove Edge’s new Paste Mechanism

1. Now that you know how the change affects users, you can revert to the old link pasting method as follows. Firstly, Open Edge browser, click the horizontal ellipsis button in the upper right corner and choose ‘Settings’.

2. From Settings, Go to ‘Share, copy and paste’. It is the sixth section in the left sidebar. Here you will find two options – Link and Plain text and the option will be set to Link by default.

3. As you can imagine, the Link option pastes URLs as hyperlinked titles and Plain text pastes them as a web address. all you have to do Select ‘plain text’ and restart the browser.

Paste as URL without changing Default Setting

If you prefer the new hyperlink paste mechanism, but sometimes want the flexibility to paste as URLs, you have two options: First, copy the web address you want and right-click on the paste target. From the ‘Paste As’ option appearing now Select ‘Connection’. As an alternaive, Use the ‘Ctrl + Shift + V’ keyboard shortcut To paste the URL as plain text.
