How To Disable My Journal On Galaxy S5

The brand new Samsung Galaxy S5 is an impressive and powerful smartphone that is definitely packed with hardware and software features, but not everyone needs or wants all of them.

With a stunning camera, fingerprint sensor, heart rate monitor, tons of S-Health apps for fitness, and all those gesture controls, the Galaxy S5 is packed with features. One in particular is the My Magazine app (basically Flipboard), which completely takes over every aspect of your smartphone.

The Galaxy S5 has plenty of home screens for owners to add apps and widgets to, but one swipe left from your home screen and it’s all over. You will be greeted with a huge full-screen “My Magazine” covering the entire device. Below we will explain what it does and how you can disable My Magazine on the Galaxy S5.

Like the HTC Blinkfeed, it serves a purpose. My Magazine is highly customizable and allows the user to put tons of content front and center right on the device. Be it news alerts, sports scores and highlights, business, art and beautiful photos or wallpapers and even social alerts. Everything is customizable and that includes Facebook, Twitter and tons of other social networks.

While it’s a great news and content aggregator, we’ve received a lot of questions on how to disable it. If you like the Galaxy S5 but don’t want My Magazine to take up the entire home screen, here’s how to remove it.

Disable My Journal

There are multiple ways to turn off My Magazine on the Galaxy S5, but none of them are very obvious. The new settings menu is not terribly user friendly and is hidden deep in the settings where you’ll find My Magazine and how to disable it.

The easiest way takes just three taps directly from your home screen and is super easy. Long press anywhere on your home screen where there is no app icon and the Galaxy S5 will go into home screen edit mode. This is where you change wallpapers, add widgets or change home screen settings with the settings icon in the bottom right. Tap the gear-shaped “” button, and then uncheck .

Users can also navigate through the extensive settings menu on their Galaxy S5 and disable My Magazine in the same way. Settings > Scroll down halfway and select the blue Home screen icon > and uncheck My Magazine as shown above. That’s all, you’re ready.

Now you can long press anywhere on your home screen and go back to edit mode and add pages to the left side of your home screen to add additional apps. If you like a certain layout with apps on both sides of the home screen, this is how you get it back. Pretty easy isn’t it?

Close My Journal

Another step some users may want to save as much space and battery as possible is to turn My Magzine off completely. The Galaxy S5 is full of software scams and junk apps, especially 3rd party software from Verizon and AT&T. All of these can be disabled and actually turned off in settings. If you don’t want this app tray to be full of Verizon apps, close them all and they will all be gone. They are still on the phone, but do not appear in your app tray.

GS5-Magazine OFF

Doing so will completely disable the My Magazine feature and also turn it off completely. It will no longer occupy a significant space on your home screen and will not appear anywhere except in the list of applications in the manager, which is detailed directly above.

If for some reason you decide you want to give the feature back to try My Magazine one more time or show it to a friend, do the same steps backwards as above and turn it on or re-enable it from the home screen settings.

You should do it?

Every smartphone owner is different and everyone uses a device in a certain way. Many users and Galaxy S5 buyers can take advantage and enjoy everything My Magazine has to offer, but it’s not for everyone. It’s just a personal choice, so do what you want.

It’s worth noting that My Magazine will constantly update multiple sources (based on customization and preferences) to offer tons of news and information that could negatively impact battery life. If you’re trying to get as much battery life as possible from the Galaxy S5, it might be a good idea to disable My Magazine.

In the end, it’s all about you, the user, and what you want to do with your smartphone. If it’s something you want to have a lot of information on in the blink of an eye, try My Magazine. If you prefer to start Bleacher Report and Facebook manually, you can do exactly that. Enjoy!
