Apparently, Facebook Messenger can tell others your exact location. Here’s how to prevent this from happening.
By default, Facebook Messenger tracks your location and embeds this information in all messages you send through the service on your mobile device. That is, unless you manually disable the app from using your location.
using a Google Chrome extension called Marauder MapAs long as the sender’s device has location enabled, you can see where any message was sent from.
To use the extension, you just have to install it and then open your messages in the Facebook web interface. From there, you can turn off the timestamp of a message and get a map popup that pinpoints the sender’s location.
Again, this only works if the sender has location enabled in the Facebook Messenger app; this will most likely work as this is a default setting that can only be turned off if the user manually enters it and turns it off.
If you don’t want your location to be tracked while chatting on Facebook Messenger on your iPhone or Android device, here’s how to disable location tracking and prevent others from knowing your location.
on iPhone
Fortunately, disabling location tracking for Facebook Messenger is pretty straightforward. On iPhone, all it takes is to go into settings and do a toggle.
Go to. Find it in the list and turn the toggle switch to the off position so it’s gray, not green.
This will prevent Facebook Messenger from sending your location with future messages, but one thing to note is that it will not delete the old location information, so keep that in mind.
on Android
If you have an Android device, here’s how to disable location tracking in Facebook Messenger.
While in the Facebook Messenger app, tap the Menu icon and go to . From there, simply uncheck the box that enables location services.
It’s also a good idea to browse your apps and disable location services primarily for apps that don’t really need your location. It makes sense for navigation apps, but not so much for messaging apps.
While many people see this as another reason not to use Facebook products, we still consider Facebook Messenger to be one of the best messaging apps. It’s a great app available for both iPhone and Android devices and makes it possible for users to chat with their Facebook friends on the go. Of course, if you’re near a computer, you can still use Facebook’s web chat interface and messaging platform, but we find the mobile app much more intuitive.
One of the things I love about Facebook Messenger is the user interface; It is simple, clean and easy to use. The same cannot really be said for the web interface. It seems like Facebook is constantly changing every few months and it’s hard to get consistency when using the Facebook website. Also, the distinction between Facebook Chat and Messages platform can be confusing for many users. Facebook Messenger combines both platforms to make it easy to use.
Facebook Chat on the web is also full of bugs. Most of the time I will mark a message as read, but when I go back to Facebook later, it still shows up as unread. I’ve never had this issue with the mobile app, and I haven’t encountered any bugs in the app in the first place, making it a great app to use without weighing it down too much.
