I love the group messaging feature in iMessage. With iOS 14, the introduction of new iMessage features like inline reply and the ability to tag or mention people in group messages made it even better. However, the new mention feature also means you’ll get notifications if someone mentions your name, even in muted group threads. In this post, I will show you how you can disable the iMessage mentions notification to fix this problem.
Disable iMessage Mentions Notification on iPhone
While I’d like to keep the mention for silent groups turned on as it helps me get notifications for messages that are for me without having to constantly bombard all messages with notifications, there are some groups I’d like to mute completely.
The only problem is you can’t do this on a group basis. You can disable mention notification for all groups or none. So keep that in mind before proceeding with this setup.
1. Open the Settings app and tap on Messages.
2. Here, Scroll down to find the “Report Me” button under “Mentions” and disable it.
This much. You won’t receive notifications for muted conversations, even if someone mentions your name in a group chat.
Completely Mute Group Messages on iPhone and iPad
As you can see, the steps are pretty simple. I wish Apple would let me turn off mention notifications for certain groups. But until that feature comes, I guess we have to make do with what we have right now. At least I don’t have to get mention notifications when I don’t want to.
iOS 14 is sprinkled with features like this. If you have the update installed, be sure to check out our coverage of new features, including back-tap, widgets, custom icons, and more.
