However, after a few months of owning it, users will fill it with apps and games. With that in mind, below is a guide on how to manage and disable automatic app updates on Pixel.
Google’s new phone is one of the best Android smartphones ever. The more we use it, the more apps fill up the storage. Owners who don’t want to deal with constant app updates often have a few questions about managing the Google Play Store.
Those who do not want the Pixel to update itself or are not bothered by tons of notifications can change these settings. This guide is perfect for iPhone conversions or first-time Android users. Read on for more details on app updates.
By default, Pixel (and most Android phones) automatically update apps; this is the easiest way to leave something for most owners. However, some owners want to control everything. Be it to save data and update over WiFi only, or to see and know what has been updated. Also, Play Store automatically adds an icon to the home screen for new downloads. This is one more setting that we can quickly disable.
Everyone has different needs, wants or preferences for settings on a phone. Below we will explain where and how to modify the Google Play Store according to your needs.
Instructions
This is not an option in settings. Instead, we’ll go to the actual Google Play Store app on your phone. It’s labeled “Play Store” in the app drawer.
Once opened, select the top left (3 lines) menu button next to the “Google Play” search bar. From here go to “Settings” and select it as shown below.
Now the first option on the list is what we’re looking for. It says automatically update apps. Tap here and choose the one that works best for you. Only without updating over WiFi or auto-updating apps. This is a user preference. Some want everything done for them, some want to see and control everything.
Choosing “Update apps automatically” means users will be constantly notified that updates are available. I chose this to be able to see what’s updated, look at the change logs, and know what’s going on on my device.
Then, as we mentioned above, you can also uncheck the option here that automatically places icons on the home screen.
What Should You Choose?
Average smartphone users or those new to Android should let the smartphone do everything for them. Some people hate getting notifications for updates all the time, so set it to automatic. It’s all about user preference.
Owners using auto-update won’t know what’s new because they don’t see the changelog. Users will notice changes to popular apps like Facebook, YouTube, and even games you might enjoy.
At the end of the day, choose what’s best for you and enjoy. These steps are the same for all Android smartphones and tablets with Google Play Store.
