How to Disable Automatic App Updates on Moto X Pure Edition

Out of the box, the new Moto X Pure Edition won’t have a lot of apps that need updating, and that’s because there’s no carrier bloatware or additional app junk like we got from Samsung or other companies. However, after a few months of owning it, users will fill it with apps and games. For those who don’t want to constantly deal with update notifications or want to check what’s updated, here we explain how to manage or disable automatic app updates on the 2015 Moto X.

Motorola’s new smartphone runs stock Android and has almost no pre-installed apps right out of the box, but eventually owners will fill it up. When they do, they will receive constant notifications for app updates or update automatically. We constantly get questions about how to disable this, and we’ll explain how below.

Those who do not want their Moto X to update itself, or rather are not bothered by tons of notifications to update apps on a daily basis, have several easy ways to fix this problem. This is great for iPhone beginners or first-time Android owners, and it only takes a few clicks to change it in the Google Play Store settings to your liking.

By default, Moto X PE automatically updates apps; this is the easiest way to drop something for many, but at the same time, many users want to check what updates and when. This could be to save data and update over WiFi only, or to check which apps actually update. Play Store also adds an icon for new downloads to the home screen and we can disable this obnoxious feature in this settings menu as well.

Whether you do this or not is up to you and everyone has different wishes and preferences. Those who want full control will want to follow the steps below.

Instructions

The settings we’re going to change here today are in the Google Play Store, where you get the games, apps or music. Not on the phone. Go to the Google Play Store by tapping the icon on your home screen or finding it in your app tray.

After entering the Google Play Store, users can select the top left (3 lines) menu button next to the “Google Play” search bar. From here go to “Settings” and select it as shown below.

From here, users will be in the general settings of the Google Play Store. The first option listed in this menu is “Auto-update apps” and you will want to select that. Choose the one that works best for you here. By default, it will be set to automatically update apps over Wi-Fi, which most users should leave on. No one wants apps to be updated while using data, as this uses up a full 2-4GB data plan very quickly and incurs an overcharge from a carrier. Choose “Auto-update apps” instead.

This option means users will be constantly notified in the notification tray that apps need to be updated instead of just updating them on their own. However, this gives owners control to see what has been updated, check the change logs to find out what’s new, and stop the updates. I would never update my text message replacement app, Textra, as I like an older version than the one currently available. If auto was enabled, it would update and I would lose my favorite version.

It is best to update apps over WiFi to save data, and WiFi is usually faster and saves battery life and time. Then, as we mentioned above, here you can also uncheck the option that automatically puts icons on the home screen when an app is downloaded. That’s nice, but if you download too much, you’ll quickly fill all those home screens with icons.

What Should You Choose?

Average smartphone users or those new to Android should let the smartphone do everything for them. My family always hates getting notifications for updates so they have it set to automatic. Personally, I’d rather check for what updates and look at the change logs and permission requests first, so I set it up manually.

Owners using auto-update won’t know what’s new because they don’t see the “What’s New” changelog. Users will notice changes to popular apps like Facebook, YouTube, and even games you might enjoy.

In the end it’s all about personal preference. Do what suits your needs, what’s easiest for you and enjoy the new Moto X Pure Edition.
