How to Deactivate and Unlist Your Phone Number from Truecaller

Truecaller, the world’s most popular crowdsourced caller ID software, is often cited as a major privacy risk by users and activists alike. This is because the app loads your entire contact list on its servers, including names, phone numbers, email ids, and even location information. While this helps you better identify the people who are calling you, getting their information on third-party servers is a privacy nightmare for your unsigned ones. So, if you no longer want your phone number to be listed in the Truecaller database, you can follow our guide below to deactivate your account and request the company to remove or delist it from the searchable database.

Remove (Remove) Your Phone Number from the Truecaller Database

Truecaller makes it easy to spot spammers, scammers, telemarketers and cold callers and block unwanted calls, but it comes at a heavy price. While non-user numbers are listed in the Truecaller database without their permission, this is also bad for the users themselves. This is because the app loads the phone’s IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) number. So, if you are concerned about your privacy, follow the steps described below to deactivate your Truecaller account. Next, you must remove your number from the company’s database or remove it from the list.

Note: The method described below will work whether you are a Truecaller user or not. However, Truecaller users should deactivate their account before requesting delisting.

Step 1: Deactivate Truecaller Account

  • Confirm by clicking on it Remove from List in the popup. You will receive a message saying that your number will be delisted from the company’s searchable database within 24 hours.

Confirm the delisting of Truecaller

You should check back in a day or two to see if your number has been removed from the database. If your number is still callable more than a day after your opt-out request, it may be because the profile is cached (saved) locally on the device you called. Delete your search results on that device and try again. Alternatively, clear the device cache via Phone Settings > Apps > Truecaller.

Regain Your Digital Privacy by Removing Your Number from Truecaller

Note that removing it from the list will not prevent your number from revealing your personal information to users when you call. Instead, it will simply be removed from the company’s ‘searchable database’, meaning people cannot get information about you simply by calling your number. It’s not ideal, but it’s the only option the company offers. It’s pretty similar to other caller ID apps as well, so you’d better stay away from third-party Call ID apps in the App Store or Google Play.
